The Borderlands franchise has officially surpassed 100 million copies sold worldwide, marking a huge milestone for both 2K and Gearbox Software. The achievement follows the release of Borderlands 4, which launched on September 11, 2026, and marked the latest major addition to the Borderlands series.
The original Borderlands launched back in 2009, introducing players to the planet of Pandora. The game combines first-person shooting with RPG-style progression, and it has a great variety of procedurally generated weapons. Ever since then, the developers have continued to expand the series, introducing several mainline installments and spin-offs to the Borderlands franchise. This is how it managed to establish itself as one of the most recognizable names in the looter-shooter genre. However, the sales milestone is not the only reason for celebration, as Borderlands players have raised a record-breaking amount of money for charity as well.
Borderlands Surpasses 100 Million Sales and Breaks Charity Record
According to the official message published by Gearbox and 2K, the Borderlands franchise has officially crossed 100 million units sold. The developers thanked players for their support over the years, emphasizing that very few franchises have managed to reach such an important milestone. Moreover, the announcement highlighted the fact that the game has been a huge success so far, as it introduced two BL4 Story Packs, five Bounty Packs, two new Vault Hunters, and several new features.
To celebrate the achievement, Gearbox has also announced on the official Borderlands Twitter account that players can claim 20 Golden Keys for each of the five participating titles from the Borderlands series: Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands 3, and Borderlands 4. In other words, those who own all five titles can receive a total of 100 Golden Keys by redeeming the SHiFT code CZKJJ-35RH6-T9K9C-9TJJT-SXRCT. The code will be valid until November 16, 2026, and it can be redeemed only once per account. Gearbox also highlighted the fact that earlier in 2026, the Borderlands community raised a record-breaking $118,995.80 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through The Hunt, a long-running charity fundraising event. 2K Foundations and Gearbox have also pledged to match every dollar donated, up to the amount raised during the previous event, once the next edition begins on November 6, 2026. This means that the initiative has the potential to raise more than $200,000 for the hospital.

Surpassing 100 million sales is a significant achievement, especially for a franchise that is as unusual as Borderlands. However, it demonstrates that the community’s influence goes way beyond the games themselves, and since additional content is already in development, many are now waiting to see what the next big Borderlands release will be. After all, Borderlands is one of the few franchises that has somehow managed to remain relevant without abandoning the formula that made it so successful in the first place.
Perhaps the most impressive thing here is that the Borderlands universe is celebrating two different achievements at the same time, with the charity initiative showing that the franchise has actually managed to build a solid community willing to combine efforts beyond the screen. Moreover, the fact that the charity initiatives will probably continue in the future is a great way to set an example of how a franchise’s success doesn’t have to be measured in sales figures alone.
