The latest Marvel’s Wolverine hot fix addresses some potential crashes players have experienced, but more importantly, it attempts to adjust the game’s scent trail feature. Representing one of Sony’s big 2026 first-party titles, Marvel’s Wolverine has seemingly hit a number of road bumps on the path to launch. Insomniac’s latest have seen its reviews come in a little more mixed, with some fans criticizing a number of features as well.
Despite the game’s high production values and AAA polish, a wave of negativity seemingly defined the game in its lead up to its September 15 launch. Unlike Insomniac’s previous Spider-Man games, Marvel’s Wolverine has become more divisive, with fans torn over the more linear nature of the levels and features that seemingly make it a bit more hand-holdy than expected. However, even with fans seemingly split over the title and expectations not being met for many, Insomniac continues to listen to feedback in an effort to fix and adjust the overall experience. The latest update makes good on that promise from the studio.
While not anywhere near a big update, this latest patch for Marvel’s Wolverine attempts to address one of the more controversial features of the game. Wolverine’s scent ability has proven to be divisive, represented by a smoke trail that leads players to things like hidden collectibles or other important objectives. Players have felt that this feature is too aggressive, without the ability to be toned down or off, something which Insomniac’s James Stevenson confirmed due to it being a representation of Wolverine’s actual mutant tracking ability.
The feedback and debates online were certainly loud and likely helped Insomniac take another look at the scent trail. While Insomniac responded to the reception of Marvel’s Wolverine, the studio also confirmed it had plans to further refine the experience based on player feedback. The latest hot fix does just that and while it’s not super specific about what has changed, players should notice that Wolverine’s scent trail and audio sense indicators have been modified. After downloading the update, the visuals of these should be less intense thanks to reduced opacity. Insomniac also confirmed that the studio is looking into further adjustments, including potentially adding more toggles to let players further modify how they function.

Insomniac continues to work on the game even with it now out in the wild. In fact, a last-minute update for Marvel’s Wolverine even gave Logan his beard back, reminiscent of his earlier design instead of the more clean-shaven version fans have seen in recent screen shots and trailers. While not a major thing compared to other aspects of the game, the change has seemingly been praised by many and represents Insomniac’s willingness to continue changing and improving the overall experience for players.
Although the controversy has been disappointing for fans, it’s hardly the first time this debate over a game being too “hand-holdy” has come up. One of the more higher profile games to also kick off a similar level of debate is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and its yellow-paint. Used as a sort of signposting technique, the yellow paint spells out the path players should take, and a similar technique has been commonly used in many games, including Resident Evil 4, Far Cry 5, and more. In Rebirth, yellow paint marked climbable surfaces, and some fans felt like it was distracting and took away from the game’s visual beauty.
