‘Break Away from PlayStation Equals Living Room’ Sony Wants PS6 to Compete With PC

When asked about how PlayStation can compete with PC gaming, three key figures from Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) stated that the PlayStation 6 experience should move beyond the living room. PlayStation listed some key points in how it plans to let users enjoy their games away from the couch.

The news came amid a controversial time for the PlayStation brand. In early July, Sony announced that games released from January 2028 and onward would no longer receive physical disc prints. The move caused a firestorm on social media, as several users and companies criticized PlayStation amid the push toward digital exclusivity. Although PlayStation has since clarified it would support physical reprints for games released before January 2028, that has not stopped users and other companies from continuing to push Sony to reconsider its stance.

PlayStation Wants to Move the Brand Beyond the Living Room

Days before Sony revealed its plans to go completely digital, the company shed light on how it planned to bring back players who primarily play on PC. SIE President and CEO Hideaki Nishino, Studio Business CEO Hermen Hulst, and Senior Vice President of Finance and Corporate Development Lynn Azar were asked in a translated Q&A held in June about how the company can bring back users to PlayStation who migrated to PC during the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is unclear which figurehead answered the question, Sony acknowledged how the PlayStation brand was largely associated with the idea of playing video games in a living room. Sony stated that the PS6 would aim to deliver value unique to the PlayStation brand, rather than be an “alternative to PCs.” Though SIE stated it would use technological advancements and an expansion of usage styles, it is unclear what those mean.

However, Sony also stated that it noticed how some console gamers have instead utilized gaming monitors as a way to play their favorite titles. In response to the growing trend, SIE stated that it began selling gaming monitors and speakers to break away from the notion that “PlayStation equals the living room,” which has served the company well since the 1990s. One such peripheral is the upcoming PS5 Gaming Monitor, a 27″ display that will include a DualSense Charging Hook that can be used to easily recharge DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers. The PS5 Gaming Monitor will be released on August 27, though pre-orders are currently available for $349 via PlayStation Direct.

Even though Sony discussed its plans for the future, the company kept a tight lid on revealing too many details about the PS6 console. However, Sony’s move toward digital-only game releases may have inadvertently revealed that the PS6 likely won’t have a disc drive. Given that Sony’s cutoff window for new physical game releases is January 2028, it is also unlikely that the next-gen PlayStation console will be released before then.

Though the ongoing RAM crisis has caused the price of building a custom gaming PC to spike throughout 2026, some dissatisfied PlayStation fans have stated they would go to PC gaming in the wake of Sony’s pivot away from physical game discs. It remains to be seen how the PS6 will be affected by Sony’s choices.
