Bungie Releases New 'This Week in Destiny' But With a Warning

Destiny 2 is slowly wrapping things up on every facet of its operations, and the legendary This Week in Destiny blog posts are being affected as well, with Bungie issuing a key warning about them. Destiny 2 is effectively done and dusted, with its final Monument of Triumph update celebrating its highest highs and leaving the experience in the best state the community could’ve hoped for.

Though there are hints present that suggest Bungie will jump on the opportunity to continue Destiny if the opportunity shows, as per Destiny 2‘s final hidden cutscene, this is unlikely to happen anytime soon. Instead, the studio is focused squarely on Marathon as it faces imminent layoffs that might affect up to 50% of its total staff count. This means all things Destiny are slowly grinding to a halt, with TWID blog posts among them.

The remarkable success of Destiny 2‘s Monument of Triumph update failed to move Sony at all, which means plans are still on track to wind it down and leave it in a fixed, final shape for years to come. Something similar is going to happen to Bungie’s beloved TWID posts as well, with the latest saying that “soon, [Bungie’s] weekly blog entries will be entering a form of hibernation as well.” This makes sense, of course, given that virtually nothing will be going on in Destiny 2 after Monument of Triumph is sorted out, but it’s still sad to see, and makes for yet another signifier of change at the Destiny studio.

“This update was for you and seeing all the art and videos celebrating Destiny 2 has been heartwarming to us on the Community Team. Keep it coming,” says the TWID. It’s entirely possible that there simply won’t be anyone left to write TWIDs when all is said and done, given the layoff expectations at Bungie. The studio is now facing a very uncertain future that’s almost completely out of its hands, as none of its projects other than Marathon have panned out over the years. Destiny and Destiny 2 funded the majority of these projects, though Bungie turned into a single-game studio as that went on.

The biggest hit against Bungie was the fact that Marathon failed to engage audiences to the extent that it needed to, of course. Whereas Destiny 2 kept pulling hundreds of thousands of players across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms over the years, Marathon is struggling to do the same, which means it likely won’t be able to bear the brunt of Bungie’s current financial situation, such as it is. With no Destiny 3 on the horizon, Destiny 2 at sundown, and Marathon struggling to maintain its player base, it’s not hard to see that Bungie is between a rock and a hard place.

It’s not all entirely grim, however. Destiny 2: Monument of Triumph leaves the game in possibly its best state ever, with a slew of relevant activities, loot, and a huge array of content to chase after. The missing campaigns from Year 1 to Forsaken-era are still gone, and so is all the intermittent seasonal content, but what remains has seemingly been a hit with players. In fact, Bungie has gone so far as to return the revered Destiny 2 Black Armory gear via the Arena playlist, which has been a long time coming. Things change rapidly in the gaming industry, and though Destiny is now on the backpedal, that’s not to say this won’t change over the next couple of years.
