Call of Duty: Warzone is preparing to remove Black Ops Royale less than a year after introducing the mode, giving players only a limited time to keep playing it. Call of Duty continues to reshape Warzone alongside each annual release, with new maps, weapons, mechanics, and playlists arriving throughout each game’s seasonal cycle.
Black Ops Royale originally launched on March 12, 2026, as part of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Season 2, and was designed as a modern take on Black Ops 4‘s Blackout mode. Rather than following Warzone‘s usual formula, the mode removes traditional loadouts, the Gulag, Buy Stations, and in-game cash while putting greater emphasis on scavenging equipment and upgrading weapons through rarity tiers. Players also have access to mechanics such as Wingsuits, Grappling Hooks, and wall-jumping Omnimovement while fighting across Avalon. The result is a version of Call of Duty: Warzone that plays very differently from its standard Battle Royale offering. However, it has been somewhat divisive within the community.
Call of Duty: Warzone Is Removing Black Ops Royale After Just 7 Months
Activision has now confirmed that Season 6 will be players’ final opportunity to play Black Ops Royale. The season launches on September 17, giving the mode one last stretch before it disappears at the conclusion of the current seasonal cycle. Black Ops Royale debuted in March, meaning its total lifespan will amount to only 7 months from start to finish. Players will also have two final Winstreak rewards to pursue, with 10 consecutive victories unlocking the Crimson Omen Weapon Camo and 25 unlocking Contagion. The official announcement does not explain why the mode is being removed, though its departure comes as Warzone prepares to integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and progression beginning with that game’s first season.

Despite lasting only a few months, Black Ops Royale still managed to build a dedicated following during its short run. The mode’s lack of custom loadouts meant players had to rely on what they found during each match rather than immediately accessing fully customized weapons and perks like in the standard Warzone Battle Royale mode. That approach seemed to appeal to players who preferred a more traditional battle royale loop built around scavenging and adapting, while also making the mode easier to jump into without spending time leveling Black Ops 7 weapons beforehand.
However, that does not mean Warzone‘s Black Ops Royale has been free from backlash. Reactions to the removal have been sharply divided, with some players arguing that maintaining both Black Ops Royale and the standard Battle Royale spread the Warzone population too thin across too many large-scale playlists. Others have criticized the mode’s balancing and the use of bots in matchmaking, with Reddit users saying matches became less satisfying as human-filled lobbies became harder to find. This clash between players who still praise the mode’s ground-loot progression and accessibility, and those who see the bots and various balancing issues as major drawbacks may explain why its departure has produced such mixed reactions.
Black Ops Royale will at least receive one final sendoff alongside a substantial Warzone update. Season 6 brings back The Haunting to Warzone on September 17, transforming Haven’s Hollow into “Haunted Hollow” with supernatural changes and a Ghost Train while also introducing a 64-player Giant Infected mode. Additionally, new Winstreak challenges will span modes including Battle Royale, Resurgence, and Black Ops Royale, giving players another reason to revisit the departing playlist before it disappears. Black Ops Royale may ultimately have a brief place in Call of Duty history, but its stripped-down approach demonstrated that there is still an audience for a Warzone experience built around more traditional battle royale mechanics.
