Call of Duty Will Soon Take On Battlefield At The Box Office

Call of Duty Will Soon Take On Battlefield At The Box Office

A new report claims the next big video game to catch Hollywood’s attention is EA’s Battlefield, and it could lead to one of the biggest bidding wars in town as two big names are reportedly attached to the project. It also means that Call of Duty and Battlefield might one day be fighting in a new territory: the box office.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday, longtime Mission: Impossible director and writer Christopher McQuarrie and Sinners and Creed star Michael B. Jordan are apparently attached to the project. McQuarrie is set to write, direct, and produce the adaptation of EA’s popular military shooter franchise. Meanwhile, Jordan is attached to produce and could potentially star in the Battlefield movie, but the outlet reports that it will come down to “several factors.” I’d guess money and the script are two big ones.

The project is being shopped around various studios in Hollywood. EA is also attached and will be involved as a producer. Apparently, those involved in the Battlefield movie want to prioritize a theatrical release.

It’s predicted to be a pricey package, as EA won’t let the rights to Battlefield go cheap, and McQuarrie and Jordan, two of the biggest names in Hollywood right now, won’t be cheap, either. But considering Battlefield 6 was the best-selling game in 2025, I imagine studios will be willing to pay the price.

Battlefield vs Call of Duty: Hollywood Edition

This now sets up a very interesting situation. As recently announced, Paramount is fast-tracking and currently developing a Call of Duty movie, based on Activision’s juggernaut FPS series. For many, many years now, the two franchises have competed across console and PC. (Funnily enough, McQuarrie has a long history with Paramount via Mission: Impossible and could end up pitching the Battlefield movie to the studio.)

That famous rivalry cooled down after Battlefield V in 2018 and, later, Battlefield 2042 in 2021 weren’t quite the big critical and financial hits EA expected. Call of Duty continued to do pretty well in the meantime. But in 2025, the two rival franchises battled once more for gamer dollars, and a meh Call of Duty sequel, Black Ops 7, helped EA win the year and beat its longtime rival in sales. That likely led to Activision basically apologizing to fans about Black Ops 7 and promising better games in the future.

Now these two rivals will face off at the Hollywood box office. I predict a battle between meh and eh, but then again, McQuarrie is a very talented director, and Jordan is on a roll. Still, the idea of a Battlefield movie and a Call of Duty flick fills me, someone who has enjoyed both game franchises a lot, with little excitement and more confusion. We’ll see how it all plays out in the future, assuming both projects actually happen.

Call of Duty is set to arrive in theaters in June 2028. Battlefield doesn’t have a date yet.
