Canada Is Investigating Skyrim Username Error That Sent Innocent Man to Prison

Nova Scotia officials are examining how a mistaken username inspired by The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim helped send an innocent man to prison for 18 months. The case is now drawing scrutiny over how a seemingly minor error went undetected through multiple stages of the Canadian justice system, resulting in what a top government official labeled a “shocking miscarriage of justice” for one unfortunate Skyrim fan.

Brandon Klayme spent 18 months in prison due to a Skyrim username mix-up resulting in a 2023 conviction on three charges related to the possession of child abuse material, all of which were tied to online communications with a 12-year-old girl from Wisconsin. The case hinged on investigators linking Klayme to a Kik account used in the offenses. On July 23, 2026, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal acquitted him on all counts after new evidence showed that investigators had mistaken one nearly identical username for another, with the court declaring Klayme “factually innocent.”

Nova Scotia Wants Answers After the Skyrim Username Mix-Up

Nova Scotia Attorney General Scott Armstrong has now requested a detailed briefing from the province’s Public Prosecution Service on the steps taken throughout Klayme’s case. Armstrong said he wants to understand how the error passed through the justice system before deciding what action to take, adding that the province must also determine how to prevent a similar wrongful conviction from happening again. “I’m very concerned about this,” the Attorney General said on August 6, CBC reports.

Armstrong has not ruled out a public inquiry and said he would be willing to meet with Klayme or his representatives, though no discussions about potential compensation have taken place yet. The unfortunate Skyrim fan’s case has also prompted calls for action from opposition politicians. Nova Scotia NDP Leader Claudia Chender described it as a “shocking miscarriage of justice,” while Liberal House Leader Derek Mombourquette opined that the circumstances surrounding the wrongful conviction constitute grounds for a public inquiry.

How the Skyrim Username Mix-Up Led Investigators to Klayme

Investigators were trying to identify the Kik user “fus__ro_dah,” with two underscores between “fus” and “ro.” Klayme’s account, “fus_ro_dah,” used only one. Both names reference Skyrim‘s famous Fus Ro Dah Dragon Shout, but Wisconsin police mistakenly requested subscriber information for Klayme’s account instead of the one involved in the offenses. The request returned Klayme’s email address, which investigators used to obtain Google records linking him to a Halifax IP address. Halifax Regional Police then searched his home on February 5, 2021, and seized several phones and laptops.

Court Records Show There Was No Digital Evidence Linking Klayme to the Offenses

The Court of Appeal judgment adds another striking detail to the case: when Halifax Regional Police searched Klayme’s residence and seized phones and laptops, investigators found no evidence linking him to the victim, the Kik conversations, or the intimate images exchanged with the actual offender. The court also noted that there was no activity on Klayme’s Kik account during the period of the offenses and that Kik is a standalone entity that operates independently of and is in no way affiliated with Google. Likewise, the presiding appellate judge panel found no evidence that his Google account had been used to communicate with the victim. The unusual username at the center of the case derives from Skyrim‘s Dragon Language, in which “Fus Ro Dah” is the game’s Unrelenting Force Shout.
