A YouTube video posted by a child safety advocate recounted when Roblox banned journalist Chris Hansen during a live stage panel when he demonstrated how easy it is for children to interact with strangers in the game. Roblox has come under fire for its reputation as a way for predators to find and talk to children, which has led to intense scrutiny from watchdog groups and content creators.
Hansen is known for his previous work as a correspondent for Dateline NBC, namely via a segment called To Catch a Predator. The segment, which ran from 2004 to 2007, worked alongside law enforcement to catch potential Internet predators via undercover sting operations conducted throughout the US. Hansen left NBC in 2013 after 22 years with the network and currently hosts the TruBlu web series Takedown with Chris Hansen. Hansen was featured in a 2025 documentary on Roblox posted by YouTube content creator Schlep.

A YouTube video by Schlep posted on August 15 covered when Hansen was suddenly banned from Roblox during CrimeCon held in Las Vegas in late May 2026. During the panel, Hansen logged into Roblox and accessed a random chat called Ro-Meet. Hansen’s avatar was then asked by a random user if he used Snapchat, to which Hansen asked why they wanted to move any conversation away from Roblox. Roblox shortly terminated Hansen’s account for “repeated or serious rule breaking.” While Roblox has taken steps to monitor in-game chats in light of criticism, users on social media stated that Roblox made a major mistake by banning Hansen’s demonstration account from the game. As of this writing, Roblox has not publicly commented on why actions were taken against Hansen’s account.
Games like Roblox and Fortnite have also drawn the ire of government officials, as various child safety and age verification laws have taken effect throughout the decade. In May 2026, the British government drafted new rules that would prevent children from interacting with strangers in games like Roblox. Although the UK’s ban on social media for users under age 16 will go into effect in 2027, Roblox and other video games were explicitly exempted from it. While some of the details remain unclear as of this writing, Roblox must ensure that some features are disabled on a child’s account to both comply with the law and to prevent any interactions with strangers in-game.
In July 2026, Roblox revealed new in-game reporting tools that should make it easier to report issues like bullying, scams, and discrimination. Reports filed against a player or a voice chat are then handled by the relevant moderator team, where a decision will be relayed back to the player that filed the report via an in-game notification. Despite the changes, critics of Roblox stated that more actions need to be taken to protect children online.
During the summer of 2026, the US Senate opened a bipartisan investigation into Roblox, led by Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Cyberterrorism. Given that other countries across the globe have expressed concerns about Roblox, it remains to be seen how the US Senate’s investigation will turn out.
