Control Resonant’s Physical Release Officially Delayed

Control Resonant’s Physical Release Officially Delayed

Just a month or so before Control Resonant‘s official release date, developer Remedy Entertainment announced that it is being delayed from September 24 to October 15—the physical version, at least. To be clear, those who purchase Control Resonant digitally on their PC, PS5, and/or Xbox Series X/S will still be playing the game on September 24, but those who wanted a physical copy of the game must wait a little longer until October 15.

It’s worth noting that this is incredibly unusual. Not to say that it has never happened, but whatever is happening here means that many fans are being asked to purchase a different and/or second copy of Control Resonant, survive the internet without getting hit by spoilers (or just be hit by spoilers), and/or to not have the experience they were promised. Many companies, especially in light of PlayStation discs ending production in January 2028, have touted their digital sales, so perhaps the number of consumers impacted by this decision is smaller than first blush would suggest. At the same time, even if it were just one diehard customer (diehard fans are more likely to pre-order/get physical), that’s one fan paying customer potentially having their experience harmed.

Control Resonant Gameplay Shows Off Enemies and Unique Abilities

Control Resonant, the sequel to Remedy’s 2019 supernatural action game, just received a new gameplay trailer during the Sony State of Play.

Control Resonant Goes Gold and Gets a Partial Delay

It’s not all bad news. Remedy Entertainment made this announcement about Control Resonant’s physical release date delay alongside the announcement that the upcoming action game has gone gold. That means the core development of the game is finished, the master copy is ready, it is approved by platform makers, and is ready for printing. It would seem that the core delay has something to do with the company’s ability to get discs printed, but of course, nothing is said outright about it. The timing with the core controversy about PlayStation discs is interesting, nonetheless.

While many fans are excited and already know so much about the game, it’s worth highlighting that Control Resonant transfers the protagonist from Jesse Faden to her brother Dylan as he explores Control Resonant‘s Manhattan. Dylan himself has been freed from the Federal Bureau of Control to assist it in capturing an extradimensional entity that is messing with Manhattan, and Control Resonant’s combat places emphasis on melee combat (with a cool weapon called the Aberrant that shapeshifts).

It remains to be seen if this delay has any wider impact on Control Resonant‘s overall reception, and while it would be nice for Remedy to open up about this delay, it’s indicative of how much the industry has shifted on physical and digital. A few months ago, no one would have batted an eye and assumed this was an odd printing/shipping mistake. And it could be, but with companies putting a premium on digital, it’s hard to know what this delay means in that regard, if anything. Still, fans are no doubt excited for the upcoming game.

As GameRant’s Anthony Taormina wrote in his preview for Control Resonant, “I feel like fans of the first Control will be rewarded with a story that delves deeper into the relationship between Dylan and Jesse and further explores the lore surrounding the FBC. If nothing else, Control Resonant proves that Remedy Entertainment is a developer that wants to surprise and engage its fan base in new and exciting ways. I only played a small slice of it, but Control Resonant seems like another Remedy flexing its creative muscles once again.”
