Crimson Desert Stops You From Leaving the Map in the Best Way Possible

Crimson Desert Stops You From Leaving the Map in the Best Way Possible

Crimson Desert players have discovered that the game has an amazing way of stopping them from leaving the map. Historically, open-world games have always had to find creative ways to keep players within the bounds of their maps, and Crimson Desert developer Pearl Abyss has found an ingenious solution for its latest RPG.

Crimson Desert is the latest RPG from developer Pearl Abyss. The game generated a significant amount of hype online, and has launched to impressive player count numbers. It was pretty well-received critically, too. On review aggregator site OpenCritic, Crimson Desert received a Top Critic Average of 79. While not the huge score many perhaps expected from the game, it’s still a solid effort from Pearl Abyss, one that is sure to appeal to fans of open-world RPGs.

Crimson Desert Has One Rule You Need to Learn Early

Crimson Desert looks like a game you can rush through, but learning to slow down and explore its world is the key to avoiding its toughest roadblocks.

Crimson Desert Map Boundary Features a Whale That Eats You

A Crimson Desert clip posted to Reddit online by user Intelligent-You-7002 has revealed how the game handles its map boundaries. In the gameplay, the player is rowing a boat out into the open seas. When they are officially out of bounds, a timer appears, the world is engulfed in fog and becomes rainy, and the sea becomes extremely rough. After the timer reaches zero, a giant whale leaps from the water and crashes back down on the player with its mouth wide open, appearing to eat Crimson Desert‘s protagonist before fading to black. Other gamers in the thread thought Pearl Abyss’ solution to this was hilarious, but were glad that Intelligent-You-7002 found it first, so they know what not to do in their own playthrough.

It’s inevitable that players are always going to try to find ways to escape the boundaries of open-world games. It’s a problem that developers have been trying to solve for years now. Some take the easy route and simply fade to black before putting the player back in bounds. But the more memorable ones always try something unique, finding a way to keep players immersed in the experience. Some of the most creative ways developers stop players from leaving the map in the past include Grand Theft Auto 5‘s Sharks, Sea of Thieves‘ Blood Sea, and Subnautica‘s Ghost Leviathan, and it’s fair to say that Crimson Desert‘s giant whale is another great addition to the list.

It’s still very early days in players’ time with Crimson Desert. It is an enormous game, so gamers are still uncovering the secrets Pearl Abyss has hidden throughout the game world. While there are tons of Crimson Desert secrets that have already been found, it’s very likely that there is still plenty for players to discover in the coming weeks and months.

The future is looking very bright for Crimson Desert. Despite the fact that the game has been out for under a week, it has already sold over 3 million copies and maintains very strong concurrent player counts on Steam. Developer Pearl Abyss has already released a few patches to improve the game, and it seems to be working swiftly to address player complaints. Whether this early success translates to potential post-launch content remains to be seen.
