Crimson Desert is chock-full of difficult boss fights, but few compare to the Antumbra’s Sword encounter. One of the main reasons for this is because of how early in the game players can tackle it, and they would more than likely want to because of the powerful two-handed weapon they get for defeating it—Vessel of Dark Pursuit. But attempting the fight as early as players are allowed is precisely why it can be so challenging, and it ultimately serves as a great reminder that many of Crimson Desert‘s bosses aren’t to be underestimated. Antumbra’s Sword is quick, relentless, and just unpredictable enough to punish players who try to brute-force their way through it to get to the weapon on the other side, but it hurts so good and teaches a valuable lesson all players need to learn.
I am one of those who attempted the Antumbra’s Sword encounter as soon as it became available, and I had the added disadvantage of doing it during the review process for Crimson Desert, when there weren’t guides floating around on the internet that I could glean from. I had only heard about the fight in our private Discord chat, and the main reason I made a beeline for it upon hearing about it is because of how much praise the Vessel of Dark Pursuit was getting. Upon arriving and giving it a few attempts, I just about gave up, as I quickly realized how much different this boss was from the others I had already fought and defeated. But that’s when I changed my approach, emerged victorious, and walked away feeling more satisfied than I had from any encounter I experienced prior.
Crimson Desert, Community, and the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Effect
Crimson Desert is recreating a kind of discovery where players rely on each other, echoing a feeling many remember from Breath of the Wild in 2017.
Crimson Desert’s Antumbra’s Sword Boss Demands Patience and Skill in a Way Other Encounters Don’t
I will say that Crimson Desert‘s Antumbra’s Sword boss is one of those that I think everyone needs to give a shot at some point, preferably early on, because there’s a chance it will transform their approach to future encounters if they stick with it. It’s very easy to get into the mode of bringing enough healing items to merely outlast a boss in Crimson Desert rather than learn its mechanics and eventually overcome it with skill, but Antumbra’s Sword is the type of fight that is nearly impossible to win in that way. Because of that, it almost forces players to change any muscle memory they’ve developed over the course of the game leading up to that point, and it can make subsequent boss encounters feel more approachable.
How and When to Find Antumbra’s Sword in Crimson Desert
- HERNAND REGION — Found in the starting region of Hernand, accessible early in exploration
- SANCTUM OF ABSOLUTION — Head to the Sanctum of Absolution within the Hernand area
- CLOISTER FACTION QUEST TIE — Encountered during the Cloister of Ruination faction questline
- AREA LIBERATION REQUIREMENT — Triggered while liberating the Sanctum by clearing enemies
It has been said before that Antumbra’s Sword is one of those fights that feels “unfair,” simply because it moves around the arena so quickly and can even disappear before players have a chance to strike it. It throws out illusion attacks that can chunk or outright delete health if players aren’t reading them correctly, and its constant teleporting makes it difficult to track unless players stay composed and deliberate in their movements. That means panic rolling, overcommitting to combos, or trying to trade damage simply won’t cut it. Players have to slow down, observe, and carefully respond if they hope to succeed.

There are ways I know the fight can be made “easier,” like using Crimson Desert‘s Force Palm skill to stagger the boss after a well-timed Focus activation and parry, but I found that even when I tried to implement that strategy, the encounter was still challenging for me—someone who just wanted to get the Vessel of Dark Pursuit so he could cheese the Crowcaller fight he was stumped on. So, instead of relying on what everyone in the Discord chat was saying I should do, I resolved to learn the mechanics of the Antumbra’s Sword encounter in the same way I might a FromSoftware boss fight. Once I did that, I was able to subdue the foe in what felt like less than 60 seconds, and, more importantly, I walked away a better, more skilled Crimson Desert player.
After beating Antumbra’s Sword, I found myself approaching every boss differently from then on. Even with Crimson Desert‘s Crowcaller fight—which I thought the Vessel of Dark Pursuit would make easier—I applied the same strategy I had learned during my repeated attempts with Antumbra’s Sword. Instead of rushing in and hoping my healing items would carry me through any mistakes I made, I started watching for patterns, spacing my attacks, and actually respecting what each encounter was trying to do. In that sense, Antumbra’s Sword was less of a one-off challenge and more like a turning point for me in the game, and it humbled me in the best of ways.
Crimson Desert’s Antumbra’s Sword Boss Is Rewarding for the Lesson It Teaches
In the end, that’s what makes it such a great fight, even if it frustrates players in the moment. There’s a reason some in the community label Crimson Desert‘s Antumbra’s Sword encounter as unfair, especially given how quickly it can close distance or punish a single misread. But when you break it down, nearly everything it does can be learned, anticipated, and avoided with the right mindset. Its illusion-based attacks, for example, are devastating if you try to react late, but they become manageable once you recognize their rhythm and commit to dodging through the full sequence rather than interrupting it.
More importantly, the fight exposes habits that simply don’t hold up long-term. Panic dodging drains stamina and leaves you vulnerable, and that’s exactly why I’ve said in the past that Crimson Desert shouldn’t be played like a Soulslike. Overcommitting to damage windows gets you punished. Treating every encounter like a race to zero health turns the fight into chaos instead of something readable. And just healing your way through a boss encounter in Crimson Desert is boring anyway. But Antumbra’s Sword strips all of that away.
After beating Antumbra’s Sword, I found myself approaching every boss differently from then on.
By the time the fight is over, the reward almost feels secondary. The Vessel of Dark Pursuit is undeniably strong, and it can absolutely carry players through future encounters, but I’d argue that the real value comes from what the fight teaches. It forces players to meet Crimson Desert where it is rather than trying to bend it to their own habits, and once that adjustment happens, the rest of the game starts to open up in a completely different way.
