Deus Ex Dev Eidos-Montreal Conducts Mass Layoffs Affecting 124 People

Eidos-Montreal has announced a round of mass layoffs, with 124 people losing their jobs and studio head David Anfossi leaving the company.

In a statement, Eidos-Montreal said the cuts are the result of “changing project needs.” The layoffs affect people across a variety of disciplines, including production and support.

“Today is a difficult day for our studio and reflects the need to adapt and concentrate efforts where Eidos-Montreal can be most effective,” the developer said. “We are deeply grateful to the team members impacted; this decision is not a reflection of their talent, dedication, or performance.”

The studio said it will support the impacted developers with “care and respect,” but the company did not outline specifics about severance or continuing health coverage.

The cuts at Eidos-Montreal are just the latest example of downsizing in North American game development, as Fortnite studio Epic Games just recently cut 1,000+ jobs.

As for Anfossi’s departure, Eidos-Montreal thanked him for his contributions and wished him the best moving forward. Finally, the studio said “a transition plan is underway,” presumably in the area of finding a new studio head.

Anfossi was a 19-year veteran of Eidos-Montreal, having started there in 2007 as a producer on Deus Ex: Human Revolution. He was later promoted to executive producer, then became studio head in 2013. In that role, he worked on Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, as well as co-productions with Microsoft, including Grounded 2 (with Obsidian) and the Fable reboot (with Playground).

Eidos-Montreal was owned by Square Enix, but in 2022, Embracer bought the studio and Deus Ex IP, and other teams and franchises, including Crystal Dynamics and Tomb Raider.

It was reported that Eidos-Montreal was working on an unannounced “AAAA” game using Unreal Engine 5. The studio was also said to have been working on a Deus Ex game that was canceled, with 97 people laid off in 2024. Another 75 people lost their jobs at the studio in 2025. Eidos-Montreal was also apparently working on a Lord of the Rings game.
