Gothic is coming to mobile devices in 2026, THQ Nordic has revealed. The newly announced mobile port marks the third version of Gothic that is now scheduled to launch this year.
March 15 marked the 25th anniversary of Gothic‘s original launch in Germany, which was followed by an English-language release in late 2001. The open-world RPG is among the most influential and widely celebrated games developed by Piranha Bytes, a now-defunct Essen-based studio that Embracer Group acquired in May 2019 and closed in June 2024. Its impact is underlined by several celebrated developers citing it as one of the influences on their games. That group includes CD Projekt Red, which said Gothic influenced both the design and atmosphere of its 2007 game The Witcher. Warhorse Studios also cited Gothic as one of the inspirations behind the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Gothic Mobile Port Announced for the RPG’s 25th Anniversary
Commemorating the game’s 25th anniversary, THQ Nordic announced a Gothic mobile port on March 16. The new version of this dark fantasy open-world RPG is currently without a release date, but it is officially targeting a 2026 launch. It has so far only been confirmed for iOS devices, i.e., iPhones and iPads. While the brief reveal trailer accompanying THQ Nordic’s announcement doesn’t delve into many specifics, it is likely that the mobile port will be based on the Nintendo Switch version of the game, called Gothic Classic, which was originally released in September 2023. The Switch port offered modernized controls and remastered graphics.

Possible Gothic Classic Xbox and PlayStation Release Date Appears Online
Gothic Classic was previously announced for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, with official confirmation coming during the August 2025 THQ Nordic Digital Showcase. At the time, the Austrian publisher said the ports were planned for 2026. While THQ Nordic has yet to offer further details, a potential release date has now appeared in the Xbox app, which recently started listing Gothic Classic as coming on July 28, 2026. If that information is accurate, it is plausible the PlayStation version will arrive on the same date.

Separately, Gothic 1 Remake recently locked in a June 5 release date, which THQ Nordic first announced in mid-February 2026. The Unreal Engine 5 reimagining of the cult-classic RPG has been in development since 2020 at Alkimia Interactive, THQ Nordic’s Spanish subsidiary founded that same year. The Gothic remake was initially targeting a late 2024 launch but was delayed multiple times. Its development history has also been shaped by fan feedback: while the original 2019 demo drew criticism for feeling mechanically too different from Piranha Bytes’ RPG, Alkimia appeared to take that response on board, with the second demo—released in February 2025 and still available on Steam as of this writing—receiving a much warmer reception.
Gothic owes its cult status to a mix of dark fantasy atmosphere, realistic NPC routines, and writing that makes its world feel less like a player’s sandbox and more like a self-contained place. It also stands apart from most open-world RPGs through a combat system that lets the protagonist improve not only damage and defense stats but also animations, unlocking new combos by training with skilled instructors. Its sequel, Gothic 2, retained many of the same qualities while offering a larger open world. For years, some vocal fans on the r/WorldOfGothic subreddit and other forums have hoped that, if the upcoming remake is commercially successful, Alkimia will receive the resources necessary to modernize the second and third Gothic games as well.
