The developer of Cuphead, Studio MDHR, has revealed two new projects: an untitled hand-drawn Cuphead game and an experimental spin-off called Mighty Cuphead Adventure. Cuphead is widely considered one of the best retro-style games in recent years, with its success extending beyond video games and leading to a standalone animated Netflix series, The Cuphead Show!
On the review aggregator site OpenCritic, Cuphead holds an average critic score of 88, with 91% of reviewers recommending it. In 2022, Cuphead received a major DLC, The Delicious Last Course, which added a new area to the map and expanded the story. The DLC was also a critical success, earning high scores from major critics. However, fans have since been waiting for fresh content and hoping for Cuphead 2 to happen. Now, it turns out that the studio has been working on not just one, but two separate Cuphead games.
Cuphead’s Delicious Last Course Shouldn’t Be Its Final Meal
Cuphead is one of the best indie games of all time, and it’d be a loss for the medium if gamers never got another instalment.
Mighty Cuphead Adventure and a Hand-Drawn Cuphead Game Are in Development
The teaser trailer from Summer Game Fest 2026 showed a puppet Cuphead announcing two new official installments for the franchise: a 2D 8-bit action platformer called Mighty Cuphead Adventure, and another untitled project within the Cuphead universe. According to developer Studio MDHR, Mighty Cuphead Adventure is not a standard retro-inspired game; it is being created using assembly language, the same type of technology used to build video games in the 1980s and 1990s.

The untitled project, which many suspect to be the anticipated Cuphead 2, is still in very early stages of development, with the only detail shared so far being that it will be a hand-drawn game. However, Studio MDHR has teased several interesting features about the spin-off, Mighty Cuphead Adventure. It is described as a “fast-paced action platform shooter with arcade-quality graphics” paired with nostalgic music and sound effects. Built using 1980s and 1990s-era technology, the game also features authentic 8-bit visuals. Thanks to the same approach, Mighty Cuphead Adventure will also be playable on the Sega Master System with physical cartridges.
While Mighty Cuphead Adventure is coded in assembly language, it will still be compatible with modern consoles and PCs.
Is Mighty Cuphead Adventure a Co-Op Game?
The announcement for Mighty Cuphead Adventure does not specifically mention any co-op features. However, the teaser trailer suggests it may be included. During what appears to be a classic Cuphead boss fight, both Cuphead and Mugman are visible on screen, along with a two-player HUD that differs from the sections showing only a single character. Since co-op has been a defining element of Cuphead‘s gameplay and its 2022 DLC, The Delicious Last Course, it would be unusual for the developer to shift to a single-player-only model.
Studio MDHR’s Summer Game Fest 2026 announcement also confirms the return of two beloved Cuphead characters, Ms. Chalice and Elder Kettle. However, their roles in the story and gameplay remain unclear. As of this writing, there is no official release date or window for Mighty Cuphead Adventure or the untitled hand-drawn game. That said, fans are expected to get access to the spin-off before the other game, though it remains unclear how large the gap between the two releases will be, if there’s any. Additionally, developer Studio MDHR has promised to share more details about both projects in the coming months.
