A father has gone viral on the internet after throwing his son’s Nintendo Switch console out of the car window while on a ride. The man claimed that his son had disrespected him during the trip, and he called his son’s bluff by throwing the Switch console.
The Nintendo Switch has easily been one of the most successful consoles in the company’s storied history. The Switch has sold more than 150 million units since the console was first released in 2017, standing as the second-best-selling console of all-time behind the PlayStation 2. Nintendo has already seen success with the follow-up to the handheld/home-console hybrid, with the Switch 2 selling 5 million units within a month of its launch. The Switch has been a fan-favorite for many children around the world, and now, one child unexpectedly lost their console in a dramatic way.
Father Throws Son’s Nintendo Switch Console Out of Moving Car
Father of five Joel Barbour shared his “regrettable” story of parental discipline gone wrong through his personal Instagram account. Barbour briefly discussed the situation surrounding the incident, with his son Davis repeatedly disrespecting him throughout the course of the trip. Barbour had threatened to throw his son’s Nintendo Switch console out of the car window, only for the disrespect to continue and the child to call his bluff. The father later expressed his regret at the situation, given how much his son loved his Nintendo Switch console, though he did share that it “felt good” at the moment after seeing the disbelief on his son’s face.

Replies to Barbour’s video were filled with plenty of other parents expressing their support for the father’s actions. One commenter shared a similar story of their son complaining incessantly about their phone, with the child raising his voice and throwing the phone, before the parent ultimately smashed the phone with a hammer. Another Instagram user shared a story of their father breaking their Super Nintendo console, though they framed it as an example of the father not being able to control his emotions. Detractors expressed similar sentiments about parents being unable to control their emotions with their children.
While the Nintendo Switch has been a fan-favorite for children, Nintendo has given parents plenty of tools for regulating children’s playtime. Nintendo has regularly included parental controls on Switch consoles, giving users the ability to limit what games and apps their children can access. The release of GameChat with the Switch 2 also welcomed the addition of new tools for parents to protect their children, with parental approval needed for users under 14 to use the voice chat system.
Protection of children on game consoles has been a focus across multiple platforms, with age verification being a growing trend in gaming. Games like Roblox, Death Stranding, and Genshin Impact have introduced requirements for players to verify their ages before playing, alongside platforms like Steam and Discord. Many government bodies have even looked to mandate age verification in video games and online chat services, including a New York State bill that would require all online games to have age verification. The gaming industry has seen major shifts towards protecting children in online spaces, with growth likely to continue in the coming years.
