There is a lot to look forward to with Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. Between the brand-new map region, added character customization features, and new endgame content, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is an expansion that is truly packed to the brim. Fans who were hoping for some new vocations might be slightly disappointed, though. Capcom has confirmed that Dark Arisen will not be adding any new vocations to the game, but there is a major silver lining. Instead of new vocations, the game’s existing classes are getting some serious upgrades.
The lead up to Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen‘s release date has technically been months in the making, but fans have been wanting an expansion ever since 2024. Now that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is coming to the Switch 2 and is bringing more content across platforms, this year could give the open-world fantasy RPG a serious bump in players. Only time will tell, of course, but going deeper with the base game’s vocations instead of adding more to the mix sounds like a solid plan to breathe more life into the experience.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Understands That Revamping Base Features Can Be More Powerful Than Newness
It’s not like Dark Arisen is completely shying away from adding new content to Dragon’s Dogma 2. The new Norgan region and the 12 Lost Rites dungeons are significantly expanding the game’s world, but the team behind Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is aware that simply bringing new features to the game isn’t the full solution. Capcom has been well aware of Dragon’s Dogma 2 criticism over the past two years, and the backlash served as a key catalyst behind Dark Arisen’s development.
Capcom wants to make things right with Dragon’s Dogma 2 through Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, and that requires a blend of both new features and tweaking and upgrading old ones. Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s vocations offer a solid variety for gamers and their unique play styles, but devs realized that the class system could go even deeper. More in-depth mechanics are often more satisfying than simply having as many options as possible. Dragon’s Dogma 2 already features 10 vocation options, and adding one or two more risks being overkill, or worse, unsatisfying because of the potential lack of depth.
A Summary of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Vocations and Their Confirmed Dark Arisen Upgrades
- Fighter – One-handed axes, upgrades to Burst Strike, Cloudward Strike, Full Moon Slash, Gutting Skewer, Counter Slash, and True Deflect, plus at least two new shield perks.
- Archer – Upgraded moves like Stampede Shot and Cataract Shot, a Spiral Arrow upgrade called Corkscrew Arrow, new double backflip skill, and a new unnamed perk.
- Mage – Upgrades to High Frigor, Fire Affinity, High Halidom, Argent Succor, High Spellhold, and a new perk.
- Thief – Upgrades to Cutting Wind, Powder Blast, Draw and Quarter, Concussive Leap, and two new skills, one unnamed and one called Twin Fangs.
- Warrior – Two-handed axes, upgrades to Razing Sweep, Ravening Lunge, and Tidal Fury.
- Sorcerer – Upgrades to High Frigor, High Spellhold, High Salamander, High Hagol, Heigh Decanter, High Seism, and the addition of Brontide.
- Mystic Spearhand – Upgrades to Seching Storm, Dragoun’s Foin, Skiedragoun’s Feste, plus new skills that have yet to be named.
- Magic Archer – Upgrades to Arctic Bolt, Recovery Arrow, Sagittate Avalanche, and a new skill that has yet to be named.
- Trickster – Upgrade to Fragrant Alarum and new skills, but specific details have been kept under wraps.
- Warfarer – Since this is Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s customizable jack-of-all-trades vocation, there aren’t any Warfarer-specific upgrades, because every class upgrade applies.
It’s clear that certain vocation upgrade details have been more obvious than others. That might be particularly frustrating for players who are eager to play as a Trickster or Magic Archer, but the bright side is that this at least still leaves plenty of room for surprise. Every Dragon’s Dogma 2 class has its own unique play style, and these upgrades hopefully succeed in making each vocation feel even more distinct.
The Wait for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Is Finally Almost Over
There are a lot of exciting games coming to Switch 2 in October, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 joining in on that party is going to be a big moment for the RPG. It may have been two years since its original launch, but the Switch 2 release will expand the game’s reach even more, which could bode well for the franchise’s future if it resonates with Nintendo fans.
Between Capcom stopping Dragon’s Dogma 2 microtransactions and adding several quality-of-life improvements to the game leading up to Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen‘s launch, the fantasy RPG’s future looks brighter than it did two years ago. Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen presents a real opportunity for the game to have a second chance, which is something that a lot never get to experience.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 isn’t just going deeper with its vocations, either. The new Norgan region is designed with verticality and environmental depth in mind instead of just taking up space for the sake of being big.
Of course, whether Dragon’s Dogma 2 gets its very own Cyberpunk 2077 redemption story remains to be seen, but it’s definitely possible. Overall, combining new features like Norgan with more in-depth mechanics is the right call. It addresses fan complaints while also showcasing that the game still has plenty of new things to offer, which could potentially mean more post-launch content down the road.
