David Hayter, the actor who originated the voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, will reprise his role for the character’s upcoming appearance in Rainbow Six Siege. Appropriately enough, Snake is arriving in the game just in time to come face-to-face with Zero aka Sam Fisher, the star of the Splinter Cell video games.
“For us, it was really a core objective to get Hayter for the English VO,” creative director Joshua Mills told GameSpot. “Because it’s just, again, very iconic, and we really wanted to be able to deliver that as far as the English VO.”
Mills and content director Christopher Budgen confirmed that the team tried to incorporate Snake’s signature cardboard box into the game. It just didn’t quite work very well in the world of Rainbow Six Siege.
“One of the earliest prototypes on the operator cell was the cardboard box,” said Mills. “And we played it. We did play it. So, it was pretty wild.”
The team ultimately decided to incorporate Snake’s Soliton Radar system because that was a better fit for this game. Mills and Budgen also revealed that Snake and Fisher already knew each other prior to the events of this story.
“I think what’s unique about Year 11 Season 1 is it’s a one-off kind of story element that happens where Zero calls in a favor to Snake, and Snake answers that call and helps him with a personal mission,” noted Mills. “At the end of Year 11 Season 1, both are, narratively, actually being written out of the story at that point. They’ll still obviously be playable in the game and be part of the roster, but the reality is they come together for this very key moment, and then move on.”
Rainbow Six Siege’s Year 11, Season 1 will begin in March.
