Destiny 2 is Getting Its Final Live-Service Update Soon

As fans have been asking for any sort of information on what’s going on with Destiny 2, Bungie finally reveals its plans for the game and, it’ll likely leave players with mixed emotions. The future of Destiny 2 has been murky at best over the past months, as well as the delay to March’s major update. Despite a tentative roadmap of expansions still yet to come, Bungie is now changing course completely, choosing to end the game rather than see it continue to limp along.

Following the celebrated launch of The Final Shape, which gave players closure for its 10-year-long narrative surrounding the Light and Darkness Saga, Destiny 2 has fallen into a tailspin that it continues to struggle to pull out of. Despite an attempt to kickstart a new storyline in the Year of Prophecy, Destiny 2‘s player numbers have continued to plummet as the Edge of Fate expansion received plenty of criticism for gameplay and mechanical changes, such as the addition of the Portal. Although Renegades proved to be a hit with players, the damage had already been done, with lack of communication and an outline for the future compounding those issues further.

Most Bungie Developers Are Working on Marathon Instead of Destiny 2

A new report indicates that the majority of the team working at Bungie has been assigned to work on Marathon instead of Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 Is Coming To An End

Red flags were raised back in February when the expected Shadow & Order update for Destiny 2 was ultimately delayed into June. From there, fans were largely met with silence, as Bungie seemingly pivoted to its latest title, Marathon. Concern continued to grow as months came and went, and no updates were provided, leading many to wonder if the update was due for another delay, further pushing future content even more down the road. However, the end of the road has finally arrived, likely much sooner than some expected, with Bungie making things official in a new blog post.

In a lengthy new post, Bungie confirmed what many players were silently thinking, that Destiny 2 is coming to an end on June 9, 2026. On that date, Destiny 2 will be getting its final live-service content update, signaling the official end of Bungie’s active development for the game. However, while Bungie may be moving on, the game will still be playable, similar to how the original Destiny still is. Bungie concludes its post by thanking players, recalling major moments, and confirming that the studio will be turning to a new beginning by incubating its next games.

Although no longer known as Shadow and Order, Destiny 2 is getting its Moments of Triumph for 2026, while also including a bunch of new content that was heavily rumored. Similar to previous Moments of Triumph in Destiny 2, the 2026 version is intentionally more broad in scope, covering an array of game-wide Triumphs instead of focusing solely on the past year. Legendary Marks are returning, as well as a wide selection of free armor ornaments, accessories, weapon engrams, and more.

To help the update truly feel meaningful, Moments of Triumph also includes smaller character story beats to help push the narrative further while leaving them in interesting places. Expect plenty of callbacks, Easter eggs, references, and more. Also, this update will also see the Director return as the center of activities and push the controversial Portal in Destiny 2 out of the way.

Pantheon 2.0 is also arriving as a permanent addition to the game. While the original Destiny 2 Pantheon activity was a hit with fans, it was only around for a limited time. However, this version will feature a fresh slate of bosses to battle against, but multiple activities, new rewards, and eventually rotating encounters.

However, that’s not all. Bungie is making sure that Destiny 2 is going out with a bang as it’s getting a slate of new features from being able to transmog exotic armor, the original SHadow and Order Rewards Pass being available, Gambit Ops getting fresh rewards, an updated Crucible playlist, Portal getting overhauled, Raid and Dungeon loot getting updated, as well as new class abilities and aspects being added. Lastly, the biggest surprise of all sees the much anticipated return of the Sparrow Racing League to Destiny 2, a fan favorite game mode only this time infused with unique rewards, armor sets, and maps to race on. Bungie is planning on doing a deep dive into each part of this massive update over the next few weeks.
