Did Destiny 2 Devs Send a Message With This Week’s Xur Weapons?

Did Destiny 2 Devs Send a Message With This Week’s Xur Weapons?

Destiny 2‘s weekend vendor, Xur, seems to have a message for players after the recent news of the game’s discontinued support starting in June 2026. Destiny 2 has been undergoing major shifts ever since it launched its Final Shape expansion and subsequent updates, marking the end of the Light and Darkness saga and the start of a new one centered on The Nine.

Many fans thought The Final Shape to be the ultimate expansion for Destiny 2, and a natural closure to the stories Bungie has been telling for over a decade. However, much of the game’s universe remains unexplored, and many characters and stories still have the potential to unfold. But with Destiny 2‘s impending death, due to getting its final live-service update in June 2026 and then remaining playable with no new content, all that potential seems to be destined to remain untapped for good.

Marathon Is Being Review Bombed Yet Again

Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon is once again being review bombed, though a recent announcement from the studio seems to be the main catalyst.

Destiny 2’s Xur Says Farewell to Fans With Weapon Lineup

Yesterday, May 22, just one day after the official post on Twitter/X stating that Destiny 2 will get its final update in June, the game’s weekend vendor, Xur, appeared in The Tower with new wares. While its selection has historically been random, this week’s Legendary Weapons seem to be all but accidental, as they have either names or descriptions that can be interpreted as a message from Bungie devs to the fans. These are:

  • Seventh Seraph SAW
  • Nature of the Beast
  • Berenger’s Memory
  • First In, Last Out
  • Farewell
  • The Vision
  • Duty Bound
  • Deadpan Delivery
  • Abyssal Edge

While the hidden message may not involve each weapon in Xur’s inventory, some definitely are more telling than others. Every weapon has accompanying text and/or lore, and Nature of the Beast’s reads “Don’t let them change you,” which could be a message to all Guardians. Berenger’s Memory says, “Take your place among the company of heroes,” and it too seems to be dedicated to players who helped shape the game’s universe. Perhaps more important is Duty Bound’s text, which is what Sloane tells Zavala, “Due respect, Commander? I was there when the Hive found us on Earth. I was there when we stopped them on Titan. And I’ll be there when we wipe them out.” Since Destiny 3 is not happening, Sloane may never get her closure — much like fans of the series.

Deadpan Delivery’s text says to emphasize the “dead” part of its name, which could allude to the game’s current status and future. More obvious are First In, Last Out and Farewell, both weapons that have been in the game for a long time, and seem fitting send-offs to the stories Bungie has been telling. One could argue that there may never be another game like Destiny 2, with puzzle-ridden raids, incredible campaigns, tons of game modes for PvE and PvP alike, and so on, and they may be right.

For now, the future of the IP is very much unclear. A Destiny 3 petition is blowing up online, but reports state that a third installment of the series is not in active production. In fact, Bungie’s workforce is mostly on Marathon, and the company is expected to be affected by large layoffs. Fans will have to wait and see, but this seems to be the end.
