The Elder Scrolls is one of the most popular fantasy RPG franchises in gaming, and the name of an adorable cat at one fan’s local pet store is paying homage to the series. It has been 15 years since the last main entry in The Elder Scrolls series was released, but this cat is a fun example of just how influential the franchise has continued to be despite no new release in over a decade.
Bethesda’s latest venture has been its sci-fi tale Starfield, but a lot of the developer’s fans have had their eyes mostly set on The Elder Scrolls and its future. Gamers have been waiting for more Elder Scrolls 6 news since 2018 when the first and only trailer for the game was revealed at the now-defunct E3 convention. With no official announcement in sight, many longtime fans have still remained loyal to spending hours in Skyrim or experiencing a refreshed version of Oblivion via last year’s remaster. Some fans are even apparently naming cats after series staple characters.
Reddit user CaptainAwesomePants was at their nearby PetSmart store recently and happened to see a cat with a peculiar name: M’aiq the Liar. Elder Scrolls fans will immediately recognize that the cat is named after the Khajiit seen throughout the series who shares cryptic and bizarre messages. M’aiq the Liar has been a recurring character that has become beloved by a lot of players. The mysterious Khajiit debuted in Morrowind and can also be found in Oblivion, Skyrim, and The Elder Scrolls Online. Many see M’aiq the Liar as one of the best Elder Scrolls NPCs in the series, and his influence has now gone beyond the games and is the official name of a fluffy feline.
This real-life M’aiq the Liar is a brown and black tabby who was available for adoption. Based on the picture taken by CaptainAwesomePants, the name definitely looks fitting. The cat has a hilariously mischievous expression on its face, making it easy to understand why it was named after the character in the first place. The Elder Scrolls character and his real-life counterpart also have a similar appearance when it comes to their coats. Naming pets after video game characters isn’t uncommon, but seeing such a specific name out in the wild is a fun surprise.
It’s unclear if M’aiq the Liar is still available for adoption, but it would be the perfect pet for an Elder Scrolls fan. CaptainAwesomePants’ post has generated a lot of comments from fellow fans asking about the PetSmart’s specific location in hopes that it’s close by. M’aiq the Liar is one of the many rare Elder Scrolls encounters that players can come across, and this pet store run-in feels like recreating this specific in-game moment in the real world.

With many expecting The Elder Scrolls 6 to be Bethesda’s next game, it will be interesting to see if M’aiq the Liar makes an appearance. Since it has grown into a fun franchise tradition, a cameo from the hilariously strange Khajiit would only make sense. If he does happen to appear in The Elder Scrolls 6, it’s going to be fun to see what meta commentary he has to share this time around.
