Endfield is Charging the Wrong People

Newly-released gacha game Arknights: Endfield is stirring up a fair bit of controversy on its launch for an unusual reason, incorrectly charging fans for in-game purchases. Gacha games have hit the mainstream more than ever in recent years, with a plethora of games becoming breakout hits throughout the 2020s. Games like Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves have seen both critical and fan acclaim, with a wealth of exciting new gacha games like Neverness to Everness and Honkai: Nexus Anima on the way. Arknights: Endfield is the newest highly-anticipated gacha game to make its debut.

Developed by mobile game studio Hypergrpyh, Arknights: Endfield serves as a spin-off of popular gacha game Arknights. The game sheds the traditional tower defense style of the original Arknights for an open-world action RPG, combining combat, exploration, and base-building mechanics. Arknights: Endfield has already seen significant excitement from fans ahead of its January 22 release, with more than 35 million players reportedly pre-registering for Arknights: Endfield. Now, with Endfield finally receiving its full launch, fans are running into an unexpected issue with the game that is seriously impacting bank accounts of players worldwide.

Arknights: Endfield Players Hit With Unexpected PayPal Charges

Multiple Arknights: Endfield players have noticed strange, erroneous charges hitting their PayPal accounts after the game’s release. Many have shared details of their own unexpected PayPal payments, running a wide variety of different currencies from USD and CAD to Euros and even Japanese yen. Affected fans have warned players to disconnect their PayPal accounts from Arknights: Endfield until the issue is resolved, with some even reporting that they had been charged hundreds of dollars from other accounts after paying less than $10 themselves. Hypergryph has officially addressed the erroneous charges in Arknights: Endfield through the game’s official Twitter account, already issuing refunds and temporarily disabling PayPal payments.

The unexpected issues have seen significant charges hit the accounts of a plethora of players. One fan shared an erroneous charge to their PayPal totaling at 231,000 JPY, equating to nearly $1,500 USD from another Arknights: Endfield player. The fan did report that Hypergryph issued a refund to their PayPal account roughly four hours after the charges hit, though many others have addressed concerns about the potential financial impact and overdraft fees. The issue does seem to be exclusive to players who have linked their PayPal accounts to Arknights: Endfield, with players with linked credit cards reportedly not affected.

The PayPal Fiasco Could Tarnish Endfield’s Exciting Debut

Arknights: Endfield‘s PayPal issue could be a big blemish on an otherwise major launch for the hotly-anticipated RPG. Hypergryph gave fans multiple chances to try out the game ahead of its release, running two separate closed beta tests for Endfield with the full launch described as an “open beta.” The game has seen early praise for its combat system, in particular, boasting a similar quick swap gameplay style, similar to games like the previously-mentioned Genshin Impact, alongside an element system for its characters. Arknights: Endfield‘s in-depth factory system also provides another layer of depth to the gameplay beyond its action combat, allowing players to create a variety of different resources.

Arknights: Endfield is primed to be a big success for developer Hypergryph to kick off 2026. The game received plenty of build-up from the studio beyond its beta tests, revealing its release date with an exciting trailer at the 2025 Game Awards. The launch of Endfield also provides a wide array of platforms to try out the game, releasing not only on PC and mobile devices but also receiving a simultaneous launch on PS5. Arknights: Endfield fans can only hope that the PayPal controversy doesn’t last long, granting Endfield the big debut it deserves.
