Epic Games Store Officially Reveals Its 2 Free Mystery Games for January

The Epic Games Store has officially revealed Total War: Three Kingdoms and Wildgate as its free games for January 1. Available to claim over the first seven days of 2026, these freebies mark a return of the Epic Games Store’s typical giveaway format, which has been on pause for nearly a month.

As is tradition, Epic spent a significant chunk of December on flash freebies that kept rotating every 24 hours. This meant its normal week-long giveaways had to take a backseat for a spell. Up until today, Hogwarts Legacy was the last title that Epic Games Store users were able to claim for a full week.

Epic Games Store: A Comprehensive List Of Every Free Game It’s Had To Date

Here’s a list of all the games that have been made free on the Epic Games Store. You have until January 1 to get the current free mystery game.

Epic Games Store Launches First 7-Day Giveaway of 2026

As soon as the Epic Games Store’s free offer of Chivalry 2 came to an end on January 1, two more freebies took its place: Wildgate and Total War: Three Kingdoms. Unlike the previous 14 titles featured in the platform’s holiday season promotion—of which these two are still a part of—both of these newly introduced discounts will run for a full week instead of just a single day. They will ultimately be available until next Thursday, January 8, at 8am PT / 11am ET / 5pm CET.

A Brief Intro to Wildgate, Epic’s Latest Freebie

Wildgate is a sci-fi PvPvE shooter that launched in July 2025 as the debut title from Irvine, California-based Moonshot Games. A first-person shooter focused on cooperative play across three distinctive modes, it features everything from extraction elements and spacecraft combat to pure suffering in late-game areas such as the Reach. Wildgate prioritizes player agency as much as its genre allows it to, offering plenty of opportunities to choose between going big or quiet. As of early 2026, the game holds a 76 average rating on OpenCritic and “Very Positive” user reviews on Steam.

Three Kingdoms Is Epic’s 3rd Total War Free Game

As its name suggests, Total War: Three Kingdoms is based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a famous 14th-century Chinese novel that inspired countless other media. Distinctive theme aside, the game still strives to deliver large-scale real-time battles that the series itself is known for. It also expands on its core formula with relationship systems and more hero-centric gameplay. First released in 2019, the historical RTS generated predominantly positive buzz at launch, as underlined by its 86 average score on OpenCritic.

While Three Kingdoms was never before free on the Epic Games Store, prior installments in the Total War franchise were featured in several similar giveaways in recent memory. For instance, Creative Assembly’s critically acclaimed strategy game Total War: Warhammer was offered for free to EGS users over a week-long period ending early April 2022. Likewise, A Total War Saga: Troy was claimable on the platform back in 2020.

Total War: Three Kingdoms and Wildgate mark the official end of Epic’s three-week mystery game streak that started with Hogwarts Legacy. The Fortnite maker has thus already announced the contents of the giveaway coming right afterward, which is now confirmed to center on Bloons TD 6. Developed by New Zealand studio Ninja Kiwi, Bloons TD 6 is widely considered as one of the best tower defense games ever made. This will mark the fourth time that it’s given away to Epic Game Store users.
