While many Epic Games Store users were already turning their attention to the free game for April 23, they have until that date to pick up an unexpected freebie from the digital storefront. Said game — Undead: Rise of the Betrayed King — normally boasts a $20 price tag, but it’s currently on offer to Epic Games Store users for the unbeatable price of free.
Not only did the current week’s EGS freebie drop yesterday on April 16, that being the stealth game The Stone of Madness, but the next game was also confirmed. Come April 23, when The Stone of Madness rotates out, the new free game offered via Epic’s Marketplace will be Doomblade. A 2D action metroidvania, this game differs greatly from not just The Stone of Madness, but the bonus game being offered alongside it. Before Doomblade temporarily removes its price tag, fans of realistic action RPGs will want to pick up Undead: Rise of the Betrayed King.

The Epic Games Store announces its April 16 giveaway while officially launching a separate PC freebie that’s available in the meantime.
What is Undead: Rise of the Betrayed King About?
For those curious about this bonus freebie that may have snuck under the radar, the game’s EGS page does a fine job of summarizing its content. The story sees players taking control of the last Golden Dragon, who has disguised themselves as a human barbarian but continues to be hunted due to their true form. At the same time, they’ll be trying to protect a world that hates them from an undead threat. With the game build on Unreal Engine 5, said world should certainly be immersive, with areas players visit ranging from villages to crypts and forests.
Undead: Rise of the Betrayed King’s combat will mix melee attacks and dragon magic, with frost spears, fiery explosions, and shockwaves listed as some of the attacks the player character will wield. Players will be able to upgrade their strength and magic stats while also mastering weaponry, and they’ll even get to bring allies along for the ride, as some form of a companion system is listed.
Undead: Rise of the Betrayed King certainly sounds promising on paper, but it’s important to note that it is described as an early access game on EGS. As of now, the only content it has to offer is as follows:
- The first chapter of the story
- One mountable animal
- One companion (and their story)
- Dungeons
- A small portion of dragon gameplay
- The kingdom of Edrikia
This is apparently just 10% of the story (there will be 10 kingdoms in the final game) and 1 of 35 companions. A swimming system for the player character and their mounts will also be added. With the price tag expected to increase once the game leaves early access, and monthly updates dropping across two years that will continue adding depth to Undead: Rise of the Betrayed King, players shouldn’t miss the chance to get it while they can.

With progress being saved across every update, Undead: Rise of the Betrayed King could be the gift that keeps on giving. As mentioned earlier, the game leaves on April 23 when Doomblade becomes the EGS freebie, so players should be careful not to miss their chance.
