Escape From Tarkov has lost its Lead Game Designer, Jean Tyulegenov, after nine years at Battlestate Games. The veteran developer played a key role in shaping Escape From Tarkov‘s identity throughout its extended early access period, and the time has come for Tyulegenov to depart for pastures new.

Tyulegenov first joined Battlestate Games in 2017 as a Game Designer, and was promoted to Lead Game Designer within six months. During his tenure at the studio, Escape From Tarkov has become increasingly influential, writing the blueprint for the extraction shooter genre, also popularized by the likes of ARC Raiders and Marathon of late. He eventually helped to bring the game to its 1.0 release, which came in November 2025 after eight years in early access.

Here’s every boss players can encounter in Escape From Tarkov.

Escape From Tarkov’s Lead Game Designer Leaves

In a farewell post on X, Tyulegenov revealed that his time at Battlestate Games as Escape From Tarkov‘s Lead Game Designer had come to a close after nine years. He reflected on some of his memories from the game’s development, calling it a “difficult journey, but it was absolutely worth it.” His work helped Tarkov become one of the best extraction shooters on the market, but now, he says, “it’s time to move forward.” Tyulegenov has yet to confirm where he is headed next.

The developer’s statement was met with an outpouring of support, both from fans and other former Battlestate Games employees. In response, Tyulegenov said he “honestly had no idea how much energy the warmth of the players could give me,” claiming that it “recharge me with strength and new ideas better than any vacation could.” The sentiment was that, despite fans having their fair share of issues with Escape From Tarkov, the game is still a unique experience, one thatTyulegenov had a big hand in bringing to life.

Tyulegenov’s departure is just the most recent of a few important departures at Battlestate Games of late. Former Escape From Tarkov pair Dmitri Ogorodnikov and German Terekhov recently left the studio to found Nomion Games, where they are working on a new shooter named Rush is Real. It’s not quite enough to call it an exodus at Battlestate Games right now, but it’s noteworthy that some important names are feeling the need to move on from the studio. Given that Escape From Tarkov finally reached 1.0 last year, it makes sense that some individuals would believe the time is right to try something new creatively.

While it’s a shame to lose talented developers from Escape From Tarkov, there is still plenty of exciting stuff to come for the game. At the end of 2025, Tarkov revealed its planned 2026 content, including the highly anticipated Icebreaker map. Battlestate Games has remained quiet on Icebreaker for a while, so it will be interesting to see when it does finally see the light of day. While the game is no longer in early access, this hasn’t stopped the developer from a steady flow of post-launch content.
