Escape From Tarkov Makes Big Improvements to Matchmaking

Escape From Tarkov Makes Big Improvements to Matchmaking

Escape From Tarkov developer Battlestate Games has confirmed it has quietly made some big improvements to the matchmaking experience in the popular extraction shooter. These changes should ensure that Escape From Tarkov players find matches much quicker than before, with studio head Nikita Buyanov confirming that there are even more improvements to come.

After many years in early access, Escape From Tarkov finally reached 1.0 last year. The full release did not go perfectly to plan, and the game was review-bombed after significant server issues at launch. However, the extraction shooter quickly emerged from those problems, and developer Battlestate Games has now turned its attention to improving the existing experience and adding even more content to the game. Earlier this year, Escape From Tarkov received its first collaboration, crossing over with Escape From Duckov, a sign that there’s plenty more to come from the extraction shooter.

A new extraction shooter on Steam strongly channels Escape from Tarkov, but with zombies added to the mix.

Escape From Tarkov Quietly Reduces Matchmaking Times

In a post on X, Battlestate Games CEO Nikita Buyanov revealed that the studio has rolled out some changes to Escape From Tarkov‘s matchmaking system, “reducing matching times.” This should improve the overall matchmaking experience for players in the extraction shooter, and Buyanov says there will be further changes coming to reduce wait times even more. When asked to explain a little more about the specifics of the changes, Buyanov revealed that Escape From Tarkov is now pre-launching game rooms. On top of this, there are some optimizations to the server load process, matchmaking parameters have been tweaked, and curiously, the developer is also “testing some experimental stuff.” He denied that gamers can be put into lobbies with much fewer players now, stating, “We didn’t change that parameter.”

However Escape From Tarkov has managed to improve its matchmaking, it’s clearly working. Many of the responses to Buyanov’s post were extremely positive about the changes, with players reporting an immediately noticeable difference in the game over the last few days. Prior to the update, it was not uncommon for players to wait upwards of 10 minutes to find a lobby, especially in regions with lower player counts. Now, most players replying to Buyanov have seen that the wait is cut down to just two minutes or less, a significant improvement.

With more competition in the extraction shooter genre than ever, it’s important that Escape From Tarkov improves the matchmaking experience to be as hassle-free as possible. The likes of ARC Raiders have provided real competition for EFT, which, in its early years, benefited from being one of the only extraction shooters on the market. Bungie’s Marathon is just around the corner, too, which could prove to be another serious contender in the genre.

Despite finally reaching 1.0 last year, developer Battlestate Games is not resting on its laurels. Last month, the studio revealed Escape From Tarkov‘s 2026 roadmap, hinting at plenty of content to come for the rest of the year. The upcoming additions include a large-scale in-game event, a new boss, and more, with many of the changes also aimed at smoothing out the content that is already in the game.
