It’s been a year since Sandfall Interactive launched Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and to celebrate the game’s first anniversary, the developer is releasing a special update with new cosmetics. Even for a debut game by a new studio, it’s unlikely that anyone could have predicted just how much success Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 would go on to achieve. The game’s popularity would not only help it break sales records, but lead the studio to many end-of-year industry awards as well.
Although fans didn’t get the major DLC that most wanted, Sandfall has continued to release new upodates in the months that followed after launch. In fact, after reaching 5 million in sales, the studio released a free update which added a new location in Expedition 33 called Verso’s Drafts. The new area is intended for endgame players, featuring plenty of secrets, brand-new enemies to battle, as well as cosmetics to unlock. At the time, most fans probably thought that would be it for new content, but it seems Sandfall had another idea in mind as the game’s first anniversary rolled around.
The Unlikely Reddit Thread That Found the Lead Writer for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
There are a lot of talented writers in gaming, but most of them don’t have the astonishing story of Clair Obscur’s Jennifer Svendberg-Yen.
With the original launch date of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 being April 24, Sandfall Interactive had a little surprise to share with fans. A new update has arrived for the game, and it includes a new set of cosmetics for the main cast of characters, specifically 1st Anniversary haircuts. Interested players can grab Gustave’s Anniversary haircut at the Gestral Merchant near the Stone Wave Cliffs. For the rest of the case, Verso, Maelle, Line, Sciel, and Monaco, players will instead need to head to the Gestral Merchant near the Grosse Tete location on the world map to pick up the rest of the new hairstyles.
The patch itself also contains a few fixes and other adjustments for the game as well, but is overall a small update in general. These include collision detection fixes, adjustments to achievement text, and an issue related to opening a rest point while dialogue was playing. The update also mentions an issue with Sciel and Lune’s Danseuse outfits, specifically the lighting on them where the white parts shined excessively bright while the other parts were overly darkened. As Sandfall calls it, the lighting made the character menu “too obscur.”
Despite the large amount of success, Sandfall Interactive ultimately decided to let the story stand on its own rather than continue adding to it. Fans no doubt wanted more, but Sandfall has repeatedly said it doesn’t have plans for major DLC or expansions for Expedition 33. As it stands, Verso’s Drafts is likely as much as fans are going to get.
As for what’s next, this very well could be the final update, at least in terms of new content. Sandfall has previously confirmed that work has begun on a new game, so it’s likely that most, if not the entire studio has shifted over to that project, especially considering that the company doesn’t have plans to expand in size. For now, the studio remains secretive about what it’s working on and whether the team will return to the world of Expedition 33 or start with something brand new.
