Expedition 33 Studio Plans ‘To Go A Bit Crazy’ With Its Next Game

In a recent interview, Sandfall Interactive shed some new light on how the team is approaching its next project following last year’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Though no plot or gameplay details have been revealed just yet, Sandfall CEO and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s Creative Director did just tease that the team is “going to go a bit crazy” with its next game.

Developed by a relatively small group of French developers, many of whom previously worked at Ubisoft, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was arguably the biggest gaming surprise of last year. Released in April 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 became something of an overnight sensation. Early reviews of the turn-based RPG were incredibly positive, earning the game a Top Critic Average of 92 on OpenCritic. Commercial success soon followed, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 selling 8 million copies by its one-year anniversary. Of course, Clair Obscur was also showered with all manner of prestigious awards, including The Game Awards 2025’s Game of the Year trophy, multiple Best Performance awards, and a wealth of narrative-related awards.

The outlet Automaton recently interviewed a handful of lead developers at Sandfall Interactive. This lengthy two-part interview touches on a variety of topics, ranging from Sandfall Interactive’s Japanese influences, the possibility of a Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Nintendo Switch 2 port, and the team’s desire (or lack thereof) to expand its size. Automaton also asked the question on every Clair Obscur fans’ mind: what’s next for Sandfall Interactive?

Sandfall CEO and Creative Director Guillaume Broche had this to say about the studio’s next project:

“It’s too early to say anything precise, but we had a lot of fun creating Expedition 33, and it’s a game that we all love internally, so we want to find this flame, this passion again for the next project. Expedition 33 was quite a long project too. Especially for me, it was six years. For Tom it was five and a half, and for most of the other members it was between four and five years. That’s also why we want to let ourselves dream again and be creative again. We’re going to go a bit crazy.”

That’s not a lot of new information to go off, but it does give fans a useful insight into how Sandfall Interactive is approaching the content of its next project. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was widely praised for its creativity, especially when it came to world design and the cast’s role within it. This quote from Broche confirms that Sandfall is prioritizing creativity once again with its next project, even going as far to say that the team is “going to go a bit crazy.” It’s currently unclear exactly what that could mean, but given the multilayered complexity of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s narrative, this quote could suggest an even more intricate premise for Sandfall’s next game.

Back in January of this year, Sandfall Interactive COO and co-founder François Meurisse and Lead Writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen expressed similar sentiments. In an interview with Edge, Meurisse admitted that the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has definitely put some pressure on the studio’s next game, but that it’s “not so important.” Svedberg-Yen reinforced this notion, stating that the team needs to be guided by its “own personal taste,” and that they “need to trust [their] instincts and continue to trust the vision behind the studio.”
