Rockstar Games Issues New Official Statement on GTA 6 Politics and Culture War References

Rockstar Games has revealed its approach to politics and culture war references in Grand Theft Auto 6. Dan Houser’s departure from Rockstar has left questions about how GTA 6 might handle its political satire, and senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries has stepped in to explain its plan for the game.

Politics has always been baked into the DNA of the Grand Theft Auto series. It has never shied away from satirizing politics, and the way in which it parodies these elements often make each game a unique time capsule and commentary on the time in which they were released. There’s no doubt that GTA 6 will satirize a range of topics, but it makes sense in the current climate that politics might be front and center to that.

One of Rockstar’s original co-founders is entirely avoiding watching any gameplay from the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.

GTA 6 Avoiding ‘Too Specific’ Political References

As first reported by VGC, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries recently spoke to Love Magazine, revealing how GTA 6 will handle its political satire. “We are trying to make games that feel very specific to the moment they are released, but at the same time, not reflective of the exact world we live in, we don’t want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement, or anything like that,” Humpries explained. “Making a game in Florida, though, there is so much to work with, and we have really tried to build out our world-filling it with all the characters and culture wars necessary to make it feel alive. And then we have so many ways to tell these stories outside of actually meeting characters face to face.”

Humpries detailed his thoughts further, saying, “There is a big focus on not just holding up a mirror, but on making everything satirical, larger than life, and more grotesque. Otherwise, you could just go outside and live in the real world! We try to get to the heart of whatever issue we want to talk about and then explode the part of it we find interesting until the ridiculousness of the position becomes really clear and hopefully funny, too.” Frankly, it doesn’t sound at all dissimilar to how Rockstar already handles satire in GTA.

For Rockstar, GTA 6‘s long development time is also something to think about when writing. “We work on it for years and years, so you need to make content that will feel vital to the moment of release,” Humpries said. “If there’s a trend blowing up for six months, you need to see it for what it is and not jump on the bandwagon.” As for specifics, Humpries gave just a little away. “We took things that interested us, like the conspiracy theories, the strange ways the public reacts to everyday occurrences, and those are the kinds of things we ran with. In most cases, rather than trying to put a like-for-like of something real in the world, we have created our own slanted, overblown versions, be that a conspiracy theory, or another universal contemporary phenomenon.”

Rockstar Co-Founder is Avoiding GTA 6 Gameplay

One of the great unknowns heading into Grand Theft Auto 6 is its writing approach. Previous GTA games have had Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser as the lead writer, but he resigned from the company in 2020. This would naturally lead fans to wonder about the effect this would have on GTA 6, specifically its approach to political satire, but hopefully these latest comments from Humpries can put some of those concerns to bed.
