Fable development studio Playground Studios is pushing back against the recent reports that the game is getting delayed, potentially as late as 2027. Fans have been waiting a long time for a new entry in the Fable series, with this recent entry having been announced all the way back in 2020. Thankfully, Playground Games appears to have been making steady progress, as the developer confirmed an Autumn 2026 release earlier this year during the Xbox Developers event.
However, recent rumors have started to put that launch window into doubt. Game Mess host Jeff Grubb recently indicated that he heard from sources that Fable has been pushed internally, though the studio was still working to release the game in 2026, potentially in December before the end of the year. Another potential sticking point is the eventual launch of GTA 6 by Rockstar Games, currently slated to arrive on November 19, though many are anticipating a potential delay there as well. Whatever the case, studios are struggling to find a good time to launch games as they also attempt to avoid the GTA 6 release window.
Fable Devs Push Back Against Delay Rumors
Interestingly enough, Playground Games appears to be taking a subtle shot at the recent delay rumors, while continuing to keep fans excited about the upcoming Fable reboot. While not directly addressing the rumors, the official Fable social media account has been changing how it responds to fans online. The messaging used in response to fans who are excited to play has been updated slightly to include the previously announced release timeframe. So, instead of simply saying, “We’re excited to welcome you to Albion” the messaging has been updated to now state, “We’re excited to welcome you to Albion in Autumn 2026!” It’s not a one-off message either, as the account has continued to reply to fans online with this phrasing, so it appears to be very intentional.
Despite how positive this messaging looks, it’s worth noting that nothing officially has been confirmed or denied, so it’s entirely possible that the game has been delayed in some capacity internally at the studio. Regardless, based on the messaging, it does appear that the developers are pushing in order to keep that Autumn 2026 window accurate, so that could be a very good sign. With months to go before a potential launch date, things could change, so fans will need to continue to wait for official word.
Based on what was shown back in January, Fable appears to be a very ambitious entry in the long-running franchise previously maintained by Lionhead Studios. Playground is paying respect to the franchise by keeping many of the main themes and ideas, such as the British humor, as well as classic locations like Bowerstone. The Fable reboot also has over 1,000 unique NPCs, each with their own names, roles, and daily routines to follow, and they’ll even react in different ways based on the player’s actions and titles they’ve earned. While not officially confirmed, recent leaks have also seemingly confirmed other areas in Fable‘s massive open world that series veterans will likely be familiar with.

Either way, the back half of 2026 is currently shaping up to be a massive one for fans of video games, with GTA 6 leading the charge. However, in addition to the highly anticipated game from Rockstar, fans also have major games like Marvel’s Wolverine, Phantom Blade Zero, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and a number of potential end-of-year releases like Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Halo: Campaign Evolved. Naturally, the months of November and December will likely be a little chaotic with studios attempting to avoid GTA 6, so things could certainly change between now and then.
