The Outer Worlds 2 May Not Be a Perfect Game, But It’s a Fun Sci-Fi RPG Worth Your Time
When the sequel to Obsidian Entertainment’s satire-drenched RPG launched last year, it debuted to mixed reviews. This has likely kept some from giving it a try, but it’s worth spending time with, especially for those who are more invested in gameplay mechanics than an overall story. When it comes to The Outer Worlds 2‘s gameplay, the sequel outshines its predecessor pretty much across the board.

Key features like role-playing and combat are much stronger this time around, and the Flaw System returns with even more depth. For those who aren’t aware of Flaws in The Outer Worlds 2, it’s an approach to perks that gives a player’s character both a positive and negative attribute based on in-game activity. It leans heavily into the series’ cheeky brand of humor, and it adds a deeper layer to the gameplay that makes a character feel even more realistic, since there are specific consequences of actions that end up affecting gameplay permanently.
For example, one Flaw that players can get is Bad Knees. Players who make their character crouch too much will get 50% increased crouch speed, but their knees will also make a cracking sound that can be heard by NPCs that are within a 10-meter radius range. Even though Flaws give characters permanent debuffs, the game allows players to opt out of Flaws when they are offered.
There Are Plenty of Pros in The Outer Worlds 2, But There Are Also Some Cons to Consider

Fallout 5 Is Still Likely Years Away, Making The Outer Worlds 2 a Great Placeholder
Last year officially marked a full decade since Fallout 4 came out, and Bethesda has been pretty silent about the next mainline entry ever since. Todd Howard interviews about Fallout 5 over the years have revealed a little bit, and he’s made it clear that the game is on Bethesda’s to-do list, but that’s about it in terms of concrete updates. Fans have been kept in the dark when it comes to a release timeline, and that’s worrisome.

There have been leaks and rumors that The Elder Scrolls 6‘s release date might not be until 2028 or 2029. If that actually happens to be the case, then it’s highly likely that Fallout fans won’t see the next mainline game until sometime in the 2030s. All leaks should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism, but it’s wild to think that it could easily be 15 years or more between main Fallout games.
Gamers always have the option to go back to past Fallout games, but the Steam Summer Sale is giving the perfect opportunity to try out something new for half the price of what the game usually is. Fallout 76 has been carrying the franchise since 2018, and even though it has greatly improved since its launch, it can still grow stale at times. So, The Outer Worlds 2 is a great palate cleanser that still feels familiar.
The Steam Summer Sale lasts until July 9, so there are still a few more days to take advantage of this price cut.
The Outer Worlds 2 may not be a 10/10 title, but that shouldn’t keep gamers away. Right now, it’s a solid AAA-priced game that can be experienced for a mere $35. The 2025 game calendar was filled with a lot of major surprises that took the spotlight, and they ended up overshadowing The Outer Worlds 2. Games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and ARC Raiders were the talk of the town, and while that hype was well-deserved, some may have missed out on a great space RPG like The Outer Worlds 2.
As of now, the possibility that the Fallout 5 release date won’t be until the 2030s is becoming increasingly more likely. With the success of the Fallout TV series, Bethesda’s slow development pace is going to make it really hard to capitalize on this moment, but the wait will hopefully be worth it. Ultimately, only time will tell. Until then, there are plenty of great sci-fi RPGs out there that can help pass the time, but The Outer Worlds 2 should definitely be at the top of Steam users’ lists.
