Live-action adaptations of video games have been one of the biggest trends in Hollywood in recent years, and Amazon’s Fallout series has proven to be one of the best of the bunch. Fallout has a specific identity that’s hard to properly adapt, but the streaming hit has managed to really nail the franchise’s special brand of humor. The first two seasons have given the Fallout games an even bigger audience, and now the main question many are waiting to have answered is when Season 3 will be ready.

Unfortunately, it might be a while. We are currently in an era where television is taking a long time to push projects out, leaving two or more years between seasons. As production value grows higher, the longer it takes to bring a series to the finish line, and Fallout Season 3 might require a decent amount of patience. There is still good news, though. Based on the production cycles of Season 1 and Season 2, it might be a lot easier to pin down when the next season’s launch window is.

Fallout 5’s Ultimate Placeholder Is Finally Worth It in the Steam Summer Sale

As the wait for Fallout 5 continues to have no clear end, a great replacement is currently half price for Steam’s Summer Sale.

Using Fallout’s Past Seasons as an Oracle for Season 3’s Launch Window

Fallout Season 3 production started in May 2026, but that doesn’t mean everything will go according to plan. Making movies and TV shows is a long and complicated process, and there are plenty of unexpected issues that can throw a wrench in the process. A Fallout Season 3 release date might not be set in stone yet, but it’s definitely destined for next year.

Fallout Season 1 and Season 2’s Production Timelines

  • Season 1 – Started production in July 2022 and aired in April 2024
  • Season 2 – Started production in November 2024 and aired in December 2025

There were several more months between the first season’s production cycle and air date than there was for Fallout Season 2, but the inconsistency doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to make an educated guess about Season 3’s premiere window. Based on these two chapters, there will more than likely be around one year to a year and a half between filming and the air date.

Spoilers ahead for Fallout Season 2.

Fallout Season 3 Will Most Likely Be a Fall or Winter 2027 Release

It’s possible that Season 3 comes out next summer and repeats Season 2’s shorter timeline, but the sheer scope of the story makes a fall or winter window the more likely scenario. If the Fallout Season 2 finale made anything clear, it’s that production is going to get even more complex and expensive. The Ghoul is headed to Colorado (and potentially the Enclave’s headquarters) in hopes of finding Barb and Janey after their cryo chambers were found empty in New Vegas, which tasks production with bringing a brand-new setting to life.

Meanwhile, Lucy and Maximus have reunited but still find themselves in New Vegas, which is on the brink of a huge war as Caesar’s Legion have begun their march into the city. Between a new setting and a major battle, a lot of work will have to go into Season 3, and those major moments can easily turn film and TV productions into a much longer process. Fallout Season 3’s story is expected to go even bigger than its predecessors, and it’s hopefully well worth the wait.

The only game in the franchise to feature Colorado is Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel. Even though it inspired the show’s Season 3 scenery change, only specific parts of Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel are considered canon.

The Wait for Fallout Season 3 May Feel as Endless as Crossing the Wasteland, But There Is a Silver Lining

Even though fall/winter 2027 feels ages away at the moment, it isn’t all bad news, because Fallout 76 updates are at least there to keep fans busy until the premiere is here. The end of 2025 even brought the Burning Springs update to the game, which introduced The Ghoul as a bounty-granting NPC complete with an official voiceover by the one and only Walton Goggins. It’s not a perfect situation, but it’s better than nothing.

Plus, it’s also more than likely going to be a shorter amount of time than the wait for Fallout 5‘s release date. Bethesda has kept incredibly tight-lipped about the next mainline game, which is a shame, since the developer could be missing the ideal window to capitalize on the show’s success. That window of time is only going to be around for a limited period, so only time will tell if Fallout 5 gets released while the live-action series is underway.

The Rumored Fallout 3 and New Vegas Remasters Need to Come Out Before Season 3

Rumors and leaks about a Fallout 3 and New Vegas remaster have been circulating for years at this point, and Xbox insider Jez Corden recently claimed that the wait for those games might also be longer than expected. Bethesda has been working on a frustratingly slow timeline ever since Starfield debuted to lukewarm feedback in 2023, and it has made the desire for more Fallout and Elder Scrolls that much stronger. At this rate, Fallout 5 may not arrive until the 2030s, so Bethesda can hopefully bring these anticipated remasters to fans before Season 3 is out.

Recent Todd Howard interviews about Fallout have been incredibly vague. That has become his M.O. over the years, which is understandable. Announcing The Elder Scrolls 6 way too early has likely inspired him to be as secretive as possible about future projects. The first and only trailer for The Elder Scrolls 6 was revealed at E3 back in 2018. Since then, E3 has become defunct, and Bethesda hasn’t revealed any new information about the game.

The Fallout show is carrying the franchise at the moment, and Bethesda hopefully has more planned than just the expected Fallout 76 updates ahead of Season 3’s eventual release. Fallout‘s next chapter could always pull off the unexpected and come out sooner, but it’s important to keep realistic expectations. If there isn’t anything planned ahead of Season 3, that’s going to be a huge content drought, which is going to make the wait feel even longer if the fall/winter 2027 timeline is accurate.
