Fanatical's Build Your Own Survival Horror Bundle Is the Perfect Way to Try Out the Genre

It’s well out of spooky season, but it’s never a bad time to pick up some great indie survival horror PC games on the cheap. Fanatical’s Build Your Own Survival Horror Bundle deal is the latest in their collection of buy more, save more bundles, and you can pick up some great indie titles that are perfect for getting onboarding into the genre if you’re new. 20 games are available to pick from and the more games you add to your cart the more money you’ll save in the long run. Its baseline is 3 games for $10 ($3.33 each), then if you want 5 or more games it’s $3 per. If you decide you want 7 or more games, it gets slashed down to $2.85 per game. And if you want the full collection of 20 PC games, it’ll run you $57. This saves you 80% off of its total $282.79 value

A personal favorite of mine and a game I highly recommend is Fear the Spotlight from husband and wife development team Cozy Game Pals. It’s a super stylized third-person survival horror game with minimal user interface and no combat, but with the same amount of tension and jump scares you’d see in AAA bangers. If you’re not a fan of spooky games or are dipping your toes into the genre, Fear the Spotlight is the perfect place to start. It’s only about five hours long, and it’ll scratch any puzzle solving itch you may crave. Its PlayStation 1-era graphics are a good design choice that works in the game’s favor. GameSpot’s Mark Delaney gave it a 7/10 in his review, saying it’s “[a]n enjoyable introduction to horror games for inexperienced players”.

The DreadOut series is another great under-the-radar survival horror franchise that acts as a love letter to the genre. DreadOut 2 from 2020 is included in this bundle, where you once again play as series protagonist Linda as she fights to survive against terrifying Indonesian myth-inspired ghosts and spirits. If you’ve played a Silent Hill or Fatal Frame title, DreadOut 2 will be familiar to you, offering similar mechanics, combat, and design sensibilities. The scares are abundant, but it isn’t the longest game around, so you won’t have to live in fear too long.

At the time of writing this, there are still 30 days to claim the games in this bundle. Regardless of which games you decide to purchase and how many, each one is given as a Steam key you can redeem. Keep in mind that Steam keys will expire eventually if left untouched long enough, so be sure to redeem your games and build your endless backlong even more so you don’t lose them forever.
