Final Fantasy 14 Will Get World of Warcraft-Inspired Updates

Final Fantasy 14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida revealed that the Evercold expansion has two potential housing updates planned that were inspired by the game’s chief competitor, World of Warcraft. Final Fantasy 14 will launch Evercold sometime in January 2027 across all current-gen platforms.

On July 25, Yoshida revealed more details about Evercold during the keynote address at the Berlin FanFest event. Final Fantasy 14′s fifth Tank Job, the Bastion, will arrive with Evercold‘s launch. The Bastion uses a pair of gun-shields called “Skyltborg” to protect their allies and counter enemy attacks. Additionally, Final Fantasy 14 unveiled its long-awaited crossover with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, which will start by adding new content to the Manderville Gold Saucer this fall. The collaboration will culminate with Evercold‘s eight-player raid series, dubbed “Beyond the Lifestream.”

Final Fantasy 14 Looks to World of Warcraft for New Housing Feature Ideas

Although a lot of content for Evercold has already been mapped out, Yoshida revealed two more items that are on Square Enix’s to-do list. During a Q&A session with several media outlets after the Berlin FanFest keynote, Yoshida revealed that Final Fantasy 14‘s housing system would seek to address two major pain points. The first one was a potential overhaul of the game’s housing interface, while the second was a mysterious but highly-requested change that players had wanted. Yoshida said that he was inspired after getting hands-on with World of Warcraft‘s housing system that was added as one of the Midnight expansion’s key features.

In Final Fantasy 14, houses are currently limited to available plots per server and are distributed via a lottery system. Additionally, plots will be vacated if a player has not entered their virtual abode at any point within 45 days. Compared to Final Fantasy 14, World of Warcraft‘s housing system allows players to select and purchase any available housing plot. Should a neighborhood reach a certain capacity threshold, new ones would be generated. Although faction-based conditions apply to Alliance and Horde players alike, World of Warcraft‘s instanced housing system allows players to keep their homes even when unsubscribed from the game.

Though Yoshida did not elaborate on what the other housing feature was during the Q&A, he said that it may come out sometime before the UI refresh. Final Fantasy 14‘s most recent housing update came in Patch 7.5. The 7.5 update increased the amount of housing items that could be placed indoors or outdoors, depending on the size of the house that players own. For example, players or free companies (player guilds) who own a medium house in Eorzea can place up to 450 items indoors, up from the previous cap of 300.

One housing feature that was previously confirmed by Yoshida was the ability to change the interior size to be larger or smaller than what it originally was. Dubbed the “TARDIS update” after the iconic time-traveling device from Doctor Who, the housing interior update has not been released in Final Fantasy 14 as of this writing. Though World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14 have taken ideas from each other before, it remains to be seen when Square Enix will implement its planned housing updates in Evercold.
