A Final Fantasy 16 fan-made project that transforms the 2023 title into a classic SNES JRPG ‘demake’ is now available for users to download at no cost. The Final Fantasy 16 Demake project features several chiptune fan arrangements from FF16‘s original soundtrack, along with some modified and original pixel art from several contributors.
Originally released as a PS5-exclusive title in June 2023, Final Fantasy 16 marked a turning point for the Final Fantasy franchise. Along with being the first mainline Final Fantasy game to receive a mature rating, the action-focused combat style of Final Fantasy 16 was a point of contention for some players. However, some of Final Fantasy 16‘s strongest points included the battles waged between the game’s gargantuan Eikons, such as Phoenix and Ifrit, and its award-winning soundtrack composed by Masayoshi Soken.

Final Fantasy 16 Fans Turn The Game Into A 16-Bit Demake
While Final Fantasy 16‘s combat system is considered beginner-friendly, fans looking to experience a traditional, turn-based take on FF16 now have a way to do so. Final Fantasy 16 Demake is now available to download for free on Itch.io. According to Xvibit, the project’s main developer, Final Fantasy 16 Demake is a turn-based JRPG based on past titles like Final Fantasy 6, with 16-bit sprite artwork and animations to match. Final Fantasy 16 Demake also includes 18 musical arrangements of Final Fantasy 16‘s soundtrack, with songs such as “Land of Eikons” and “Away” receiving such treatment. Final Fantasy 16 is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux PCs, and only requires about 142 MB of available storage on Windows. Although Final Fantasy 16 can also be installed and played on a Steam Deck, Xvibit stated that some additional steps may be necessary to get the game running properly.

Additionally, players can use either a keyboard and mouse or a modern controller to play through Final Fantasy 16 Demake. Though combat in Final Fantasy 16 Demake is similar to Final Fantasy 6, one key difference is that Clive’s Eikonic abilities are on a cooldown based on the number of turns passed in battle. For example, Clive’s Phoenix Shift requires four turns to recharge. However, Final Fantasy 16 Demake is not a long adventure at present, as Xvibit stated that the average play session is roughly a half-hour in length. Ergo, most of the abilities that made Clive one of the strongest protagonists in the Final Fantasy series are not in Final Fantasy 16 Demake.
Final Fantasy 16 Demake was made using RPG Maker as its core engine, and Aseprite for the game’s sprites, animations, and pixel artwork. Developer Xvibit confirmed that some sound effects were taken and modified from past Final Fantasy games, such as Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy 4. Additionally, Xvibit said that no generative AI was used for Final Fantasy 16 Demake‘s development.
Fit the 9 games into the grid.
Although Final Fantasy 16 Demake only covers the first chapter of Final Fantasy 16, fan reception to the project has been positive as of this writing. It remains to be seen whether the FF16 Demake project will eventually include the rest of Final Fantasy 16‘s main story.
