Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Regrets Its PlayStation Trophies

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth game director Naoki Hamaguchi said that the requirements for earning the Platinum trophy were a bit excessive due to how much content had to be completed. Hamaguchi said that the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will have some balancing adjustments regarding trophies, with an added emphasis on how enjoyable they are to earn.

Hamaguchi’s statements came as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to arrive on Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. The upcoming ports will launch just over two years after FF7 Rebirth first launched as a timed exclusive on the PS5. From a technical standpoint, the performance of the Xbox Series X version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be identical to that of the PS5. However, the Switch 2 port will utilize Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology to run Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at up to 30 frames per second in docked and handheld modes.

Earning Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Platinum Trophy Was A Bit Excessive

While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has plenty of trophies and achievements for players to earn, Hamaguchi said he regretted how some of them were implemented. Hamaguchi said in an interview with Restart.run that Square Enix had prepared a diverse range of content for FF7 Rebirth, and that the design philosophy was to offer players the freedom to choose what they wanted to do. However, the Platinum trophy of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth requires playing through the game in Hard Mode to unlock some prerequisite trophies. Given that Hard Mode can only be activated by clearing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth once on any difficulty, a second playthrough of the open-world RPG can be a tedious endeavor. Hamaguchi said, “The completion condition for trophies ultimately required finishing every element of the game perfectly, which may have been a bit excessive in hindsight.”

Knowing how daunting a task earning Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Platinum was, Hamaguchi said that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 would see some changes to the trophy system. Hamaguchi said, “We’ve made thorough balancing adjustments regarding the trophies, placing greater thought on whether earning them feels enjoyable in and of itself, or whether they restrict the breadth of the experience.” With Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 set to build on the story of both Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and FF7 Remake, it remains to be seen what additional changes the upcoming title will make to keep the game fun for fans.

As previously stated by Hamaguchi, Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s yet-unnamed third chapter is approaching the end of its core development cycle. Hamaguchi said that he has over 40 full playthroughs of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 under his belt. These long playthroughs were likely done to catch any lingering issues before the game’s release. Although Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is still on pace, Hamaguchi asked fans for their continued patience.
