Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Teases What He'd Like To Work On Next

Although Final Fantasy 7 Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi is focused on completing the upcoming title, he recently shared some thoughts about the type of game project he would like to work on afterward. Hamaguchi’s statements came days after Final Fantasy 7 Revelation was first revealed to the public at Summer Game Fest 2026.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is the third and final chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, set immediately following the consequential ending of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will see the planet on the brink of destruction as a Meteor called forth by Sephiroth looms overhead. The game will further refine the Remake series’ combat style with the addition of the Job-inspired FITS system. The FITS system will grant specific abilities based on past Final Fantasy Jobs, such as Black Mage, Summoner, and Warrior.

With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation marking the end of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, Hamaguchi has seen his share of questions concerning the type of game he may work on next. In a Game Informer interview, Hamaguchi stated that his current focus is on seeing Final Fantasy 7 Revelation to its completion. However, he entertained the thought and said, “In terms of what I personally want to do, obviously, I think my next creative work is also going to be a JRPG.”

While Hamaguchi stated that he would like to work on a large-scale JRPG of some kind, he did not specify whether it would be within the Final Fantasy franchise or with a different IP altogether. However, Hamaguchi said that, whatever his next project may be, he said that the challenge excites him. Along with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Square Enix is also launching Final Fantasy Resonance on October 22 and Final Fantasy 14: Evercold in January 2027.

Hamaguchi stated that he is aware of what goes on across the internet, as Final Fantasy fans on social media have previously asked him if he was interested in a potential remake of Final Fantasy 6. Since its 1994 launch, Final Fantasy 6 has been considered among the best JRPGs of all time. However, Hamaguchi said that any hypothetical FF6 remake project would “be in better hands if it went to another creator in Square Enix.” Hamaguchi was later asked a similar question by Bloomberg, to which he stated that he is not interested in working on a remake at the moment. It is worth noting that Square Enix has not revealed any official plans to remake Final Fantasy 6, or other past Final Fantasy titles, as of this writing.

Although he has been involved with the franchise since the 2006 launch of Final Fantasy 12, Hamaguchi also stated that he has looked to Final Fantasy series veterans Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase for counsel during the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy’s development. With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation set to launch on all current-gen platforms next spring, it remains to be seen how the saga’s finale will play out compared to the original 1997 release.
