For many Final Fantasy fans, Final Fantasy 9 represents the peak of the series’ fantasy aesthetic and a return to form after Final Fantasy 7 and 8 strayed away from these roots. Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have circulated online for several years now, but nothing has yet to manifest, leaving fans waiting for the next time they’ll get to see characters like protagonist Zidane Tribal again. Thankfully, they won’t have to wait much longer, as Zidane is officially returning to the franchise on October 22.
Final Fantasy 9‘s cast of characters is often considered one of the best in the franchise, with fan-favorites like Vivi, Zidane, and Dagger all making the adventure memorable. Zidane in particular stands out as a Final Fantasy protagonist since he deviates from the typical Stoic hero archetype of characters like FF7‘s Cloud or FF8‘s Squall, and instead is much more laid-back and outgoing. In light of a Final Fantasy 9 remake, fans can still see Zidane in an official Final Fantasy game very soon, as the lovable thief is set to appear in the upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance.
Zidane Will Represent Final Fantasy 9 in FF Resonance
The next entry in the Final Fantasy series builds upon the bones of the now-defunct mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Final Fantasy Resonance is essentially a single-player offline version of Brave Exvius that takes the mobile game’s pixel art style and upgrades it to Square Enix’s popular HD-2D art style that has been used to bring games like the recent Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales and Dragon Quest HD-2D Remake series to life. As part of Resonance‘s gameplay, players will be able to summon past Final Fantasy protagonists to battle using the Visions mechanic, including characters like:
- Warrior of Light
- Firion
- Luneth
- Cecil
- Bartz
- Terra
- Cloud
- Squall
- Zidane
- Tidus
- Shantotto
- Vaan
- Lightning
- Y’shtola
- Noctis
- Clive

In Final Fantasy Resonance, Zidane will be joined by other iconic Final Fantasy protagonists like FF10‘s Tidus and FF6‘s Terra as Visions. As a thief and Terran created through Garland’s conquest to end Gaia’s cycle of souls, Zidane can use some incredibly powerful skills in Final Fantasy 9 while in his Trance form. Zidane’s Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance sees him combine his daggers into his Swallow Blade before using his Climax Edge skill, summoning a tornado that engulfs the enemy in Wind magic.
Final Fantasy 9 fans can use Zidane as a Vision when Final Fantasy Resonance launches on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 1/2 on October 22. In the meantime, the original Final Fantasy 9 is available on all of these platforms, so players can relive Zidane’s story before Resonance launches.
Aside from Final Fantasy Resonance, Zidane has a pretty expansive history of appearing in other Final Fantasy spin-off games. Zidane appears as a fighter in the Dissidia Final Fantasy series as well as the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy series. Fans eager to reunite with Zidane before Resonance releases can also check out his appearance in these games as well.
