Former PlayStation Boss Has Bad News for Bloodborne Fans

There’s no official plans for Bloodborne to get a remake, remaster, or sequel, and according to former PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden, that might not be changing anytime soon. In a recent interview, Shawn Layden spoke about what he believes is the “biggest challenge” standing in the way of a new Bloodborne game, and it’d be a tricky one to get over.

Currently, the only way to legally play Bloodborne is either natively on a PlayStation 4, or on a PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility. There’s no official PC port, no official next-gen version, and no official Bloodborne remaster or remake. Those latter products are something that fans have been loudly asking PlayStation about for quite some time now, with the only official version of the game running at a less-than-ideal 30 FPS. But despite Bloodborne‘s continued commercial success and popularity, there are no signs that a revival is on the horizon.

Bloodborne’s remarkable 2026 sales look like a promising sign for The Duskbloods, but one major difference complicates the comparison.

In a recent episode of The Trophy Room podcast (at around the 11-minute mark), former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden was asked about his personal history with Bloodborne and FromSoftware, and his thoughts on why the IP hasn’t returned in any official capacity since its 2015 debut. This question is asked in the wake of a new report from Alinea Analytics that claims that Bloodborne has sold over 250,000 copies in 2026 alone.

Layden begins by stating that “Bloodborne is great,” and that the work he did with FromSoftware was “fantastic.” The former Sony Interactive America CEO goes on to say, “Bringing back old games, there’s a certain challenge to it. Can you do something that’s not only respectful of the original, but can you recreate the phenomenon?” Additionally, Layden explains what he believes is standing in the way of a new Bloodborne project, stating that “there’s a lot of involved rights associated with it. It’s something like that where Sony is in there, From [Software] is in there, and From’s parent company is in there. I think just getting everyone to sign off on the same thing is probably the biggest challenge.”

While Shawn Layden has held some of the highest positions at Sony Interactive, he hasn’t been directly involved with the company since September 2019. As such, Layden’s comments here might not necessarily be indicative of any plans that Sony or FromSoftware might or might not have right now regarding Bloodborne. That said, Layden’s comments do fit with what FromSoftware’s own Hidetaka Miyazaki has said in the past, with the studio president stating in March 2024 that the company doesn’t own the Bloodborne IP, and that he’s “not at liberty to speak to it.”

Former president of Sony Interactive Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has a different theory, however. In a January 2025 interview with Kinda Funny, Shuhei Yoshida claimed that Miyazaki was interested in the concept of a Bloodborne remake, but that “he doesn’t want anyone else to touch it.” And given that Miyazaki and the rest of the studio have been kept booked and busy, it’s unlikely that the studio has given any serious thought into taking on a new Bloodborne project themselves in recent years.
