After a week or so of enticing teases, Epic Games has finally announced Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override with a full preview trailer. As was heavily rumored over the last few months, this upcoming Fortnite season will revolve around collaborations with iconic gaming franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, and many more.
Over the last nine years, Fortnite has hosted a wide range of gaming-themed collaborations, from Halo to Resident Evil to Tomb Raider and a whole lot in between. But despite being home to so many beloved gaming heroes and villains, Fortnite has rarely put those crossovers at the forefront of its actual gameplay. That is until now, with the upcoming Fortnite Override season set to introduce brand-new mechanics and POIs themed around some genuine gaming legends.
Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override Officially Announced
Set to begin on August 20, Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override has just received its first full-length overview trailer. The trailer begins with Troy Baker’s Jonesy falling into a digital world which is quickly populated by a handful of recognizable gaming characters, with Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon being the two most obvious new additions. As Tetrominos fall from the sky, Jonesy spots a 1UP coin and follows it as it falls into a void. Jonesy then finds himself in a 3D version of Sonic the Hedgehog”s Green Hill Zone, where he’s promptly met by the Blue Blur himself.
The latest Fortnite trailer then transitions into gameplay footage, seemingly showing a new Sonic-like running mechanic and Spin Dash move. After the camera pans out to reveal a large Green Hill-inspired POI, the player-character switches from Jonesy to Persona 5‘s Joker, who picks up a Tails-themed backpack that lets him hover in midair. A brief shot of a Pac-Man-themed island is shown, before the camera moves onto Jonesy equipping a new Mega Buster weapon alongside Mega Man himself.
The official key art released for Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override confirms a few more characters coming in this gaming-themed season. Along with Spyro, Crash, Sonic, and Joker, Shadow the Hedgehog, Dr. Eggman, Pac-Man, Mega Man‘s Rush, and Kingdom Hearts‘ Sora are all present on the season’s poster. It’s currently unclear which of these characters will be available in the next Fortnite Battle Pass and which will be available only via the Item Shop.
A plethora of returning gaming characters can also be spotted on the Fortnite Override key art. Halo‘s Master Chief, Street Fighter‘s Ryu, Mortal Kombat‘s Raiden, The Witcher‘s Geralt of Rivia, and Lara Croft have all come to Fortnite previously, but it seems they’ll be making a reappearance in this upcoming season, though their role in the season is currently unknown. It’s likely that these characters will simply be returning as skins in the Fortnite Item Shop, though they could potentially appear as NPCs in the new gaming-themed areas of the map.
