Game of Thrones spoilers ahead.
Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming just got a new update that brought back an infamous Valyrian Steel sword. In both the Game of Thrones TV show and the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, George R.R. Martin’s worldbuilding is evident in small details, objects, and how they relate to the various characters. Even named weapons or special armor play a major role, and sometimes they are as renowned as any other character. For example, Valyrian Steel weapons are named for their extreme rarity and ability to shatter White Walkers on impact.
While not a sword, one of the most notorious weapons in the series is Game of Thrones‘ Valyrian Steel dagger, which is what Arya Stark ends up with in the show. Some other weapons were lost in the series’ past, such as Brightroar from House Lannister or Dark Sister from House Targaryen. Others remained protagonists on par with major characters, and a notable sword is the one given to Brienne of Tarth, called Oathkeeper.
Game of Thrones’ Brienne of Tarth is Officially Returning With Oathkeeper
A new Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming update reintroduces the iconic Brienne of Tarth alongside her powerful Valyrian Steel sword Oathkeeper, which has a controversial past. The August update for the YooZoo and GTArcade officially licensed game marks the release of Brienne of Tarth as a Cavalry Commander and Oathkeeper as a Commander-exclusive weapon, with fragments of the sword available in the Ruins Treasure Hunt event through A, S, and SS chests. In the TV show and book series, Brienne of Tarth is considered one of the strongest Valyrian Steel users in Game of Thrones, thanks to Oathkeeper.
Oathkeeper is a problematic sword in the series’ lore, though. One of the most important events in the series happens very early on, when Game of Thrones‘ Ned Stark is killed, leaving House Stark in the hands of his children and the family scattered across the continent. Ned Stark was the owner of the iconic Valyrian Steel sword Ice, which was then confiscated and kept by the Lannisters, and ironically used to behead Ned himself at the hands of Ilyn Payne and at the orders of Joffrey Lannister. In the series, Ice is then melted down in Episode 1 of Season 4, titled Two Swords, and it makes two swords: one called Widow’s Wail, which ends up with Joffrey, then Tommen, and then Jaime, and one called Oathkeeper. Oathkeeper is given to Brienne of Tarth with the oath of protecting the Stark daughters, but the sword itself is a symbol of the betrayal of House Stark.
The Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming update also features Lord Varys as a Greensight-class Commander, SS Sacred March marching skin, and four SS troop looks — Winterfell Soldier, Brotherhood Without Banners, Beastmask Army, and Summer Isles Bowmen. The limited-time Winterfell Trial is also added, with new challenges for players to complete. However, the biggest Game of Thrones release of the year got delayed to 2027.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a new RTS game launching on Steam, and it will show itself soon at Gamescom Opening Night Live with a gameplay trailer. War for Westeros‘ August 25 appearance will likely be a huge moment for Game of Thrones fans, as the game is seeing a lot of hype online.
