GameStop is giving Pokemon TCG fans the chance to pick up a special Mewtwo promo card for a limited time to celebrate the franchise’s ongoing 30th anniversary. GameStop is one of several retailers participating in the special Pokemon event.
As one of the largest video game-focused stores in the world, GameStop has often featured a variety of unique events. The retailer regularly hosts in-store promotions for different types of trade-ins and purchases, including a recent event in August which saw GameStop give fans full trade-in value for broken controllers. GameStop also often teams up with the Pokemon franchise to give away everything from special Shiny Pokemon for the video games to exclusive promo cards for the Pokemon TCG. Now, GameStop is celebrating Pokemon‘s 30th anniversary with a limited-time promo card.

GameStop is one of several retailers participating in a brand-new giveaway from the Pokemon TCG for the game’s 30th anniversary. Shoppers who spend $15 or more on Pokemon TCG products at select retailers will receive a special Mewtwo promo card with their purchase, emblazoned with both the 30th anniversary logo and a stamp for Pokemon‘s “What’s Your Favorite?” campaign. The card is an alternate version of the Mewtwo from the recent 30th Celebration expansion and has the same attacks, HP, and set code. The Mewtwo promo card will be available both in-store and online from retailers in the U.S., Canada, and Oceania while supplies last.
Pokemon‘s newest promo card is far from the first time the franchise has run similar events. The Pokemon Company regularly markets new sets through different retailers by giving away special cards for purchasing Pokemon TCG product from its officially licensed retailers. Main expansions like Perfect Order and Chaos Rising typically feature store-exclusive promos for retailers like GameStop, with the promos typically emblazoned with the store’s logo and available in limited quantities. Pokemon also includes special cards as part of its Build and Battle Boxes, recently revealing a set of four promos for the upcoming Delta Reign set.
The special Mewtwo card arrives just after the launch of one of Pokemon‘s most exciting sets in recent years. 30th Celebration made its long-awaited debut on September 16 as an homage to three decades of the franchise, featuring a wealth of new cards for fans to collect. Each pack of the expansion includes a special Pikachu card from a pool of 30 different cards, each with artwork by some of the trading card game’s most recognizable artists. The set also introduced a brand-new rarity to the game with the addition of the colorful and highly sought-after Futuristic Rare cards.
Recent announcements from GameStop should serve to give even more fans the chance to pick up the Pokemon promos. GameStop announced a major change to its store hours, with its strip-center stores opening earlier and closing later through the end of 2026. The retailer also announced a major initiative to re-open formerly closed GameStop locations, confirming the move with the reopening of the Brooklyn, Ohio location and intending to bring back more closed storefronts. GameStop’s bold moves could spell major changes on the way for the iconic retailer looking to maintain its position atop the gaming world.
