Gears 2 Freed From Xbox 360 Jail And Ported To PC By Fan Modder

Late last week, a fan developer released a native PC port of 2008’s Gears of War 2, a game that has never officially been released for any platform other than the Xbox 360. It’s called Gears of War 2: Hollow, and it is cool. But lots of questions around the port, like how it was made, its legal status, and issues with how it runs, have also soured some folks on this version of Epic Games’ popular cover-based shooter.

YouTuber and modder Helios released his unofficial PC port of Gears of War 2 on July 16. For many, it was a big surprise, but a welcome one. Gears 2 had been stuck in Xbox 360 jail since it launched nearly 20 years ago. And while Gears 2 is backward-compatible on Series X/S, it’s still a shame that, for whatever reason, Xbox never greenlit official ports of Gears of War 2 or Gears of War 3 to PC, where lots more people could have eventually played it. All the other Gears games, including the original, made the jump. But thanks to Helios, fans who have been wanting to play Gears 2 on PC with higher-resolution visuals and framerates can finally do that.

According to Helios, Gears of War 2: Hollow was built using a previously leaked build of an unfinished, official Gears 2 PC port that never saw the light of day. Helios took this broken build and made it compatible with the assets found in the finished Xbox 360 version of Gears 2 to create a playable PC version of the game’s main campaign.

The end result is impressive, letting players run Gears 2 at 4K and 120FPS with full mouse and keyboard support. This port even supports co-op, though Helios said he hasn’t tested this much and warns it might not work as intended.

However, shortly after the port was released, players began complaining about texture and render issues as well as performance problems. Checkpoints also seem broken for players trying out the port, which can make levels a slog to finish. Some are concerned that the modder used AI vibe coding to create this version and that’s why there are so many issues, but as far as I can tell, nothing has been substantiated. People are just theorizing without any clear evidence.

Other early players had trouble tracking down the custom-created Gears of War 2 installer and the necessary files to actually play this new port. Some of this was hosted on a Discord server created by Helios, but that server seems to be gone now or locked down. The installer has since been shared elsewhere, as have the files needed to run the game, though their legal status is dubious and it’s possible Xbox could arrive at any time to shut down the party.

It seems like far from a perfect port, and there are some other issues with how it handles online play that have raised eyebrows in the community. But hopefully, Helios or other modders can fix and improve this unofficial PC version. Or even better, Xbox could take the time to port Gears of War 2 and Gears 3 to PC and Steam after all these years so people don’t have to reverse-engineer leaked PC builds just to play these games again without relying on old Xbox 360 versions.
