God of War Laufey and Intergalactic Just Became Sony’s Most Important Games in Years

God of War Laufey and Intergalactic Just Became Sony’s Most Important Games in Years

Gamers who have been tapped into the news this year are well aware that PlayStation and Sony have faced a particularly hard year. Frankly, PlayStation is in serious need of a big win. Nintendo’s mix of third-party releases and high-profile remakes like Star Fox and Ocarina of Time have given the company a solid lineup to look forward to, while Xbox has been working to revamp its image and gain more favor among gamers with new CEO Asha Sharma. Granted, every major gaming company has had its low points this year, but PlayStation’s struggles have seemingly been non-stop, leaving its two biggest upcoming exclusives in a difficult spot.

Marvel’s Wolverine‘s release was supposed to be a high point for Sony, but the reviews have been far more mixed than many were expecting. After Insomniac Games brought back-to-back hits with the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, seeing the Marvel’s Wolverine reviews have been surprising. Granted, it’s still very possible that Insomniac’s Wolverine story manages to rake in good sales, but the online discourse and critiques have thrown a wrench in Sony’s 2026 expectations. Now, God of War Laufey and Intergalactic have to pick up the pieces.

PlayStation Officially Comments on PS6 Release Date

PlayStation CEO Hiroki Totoki comments, however briefly, on the company’s plans to release the PS6.

God of War Laufey and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Are Now More Than Just Games for Sony

These two games are no longer routine single-player releases; the games are now lifelines for Sony. That’s a lot of pressure for any game to have on its shoulders, but it’s even more intense for projects like God of War Laufey and Intergalactic. As it stands, the Santa Monica Studio and Naughty Dog titles are the only major first-party console exclusives that are slated for the PS5 in the future. It’s no secret that the PS5 era has struggled to really take off and meet expectations, but only having two huge exclusives to look forward to is concerning.

Console in One

Put the consoles in the correct order.

Sony ending physical games isn’t the only issue that the company has faced this year. Putting an end to disc production after January 2028 has ignited a lot of anger from gamers, but consumer and manufacturing habits leaning more digital over the years may have made that transition inevitable. Beyond the physical games controversy, though, Sony simply hasn’t been able to catch a break.

A Brief Look at Sony’s Other 2026 Woes

  • Saros has suffered from low sales
  • Marathon has struggled to gain serious traction
  • Marvel’s Wolverine reviews are lower than anticipated
  • Sony parted ways with Kojima Productions
  • Horizon Hunters Gathering has reportedly been rebooted

Horizon Hunters Gathering being rebooted is one of many victims of Sony’s live-service initiatives. For some reason, Sony has been hellbent on making the company the next big name in live-service games, despite the trend dying down in recent years. Sony’s goals have caused a variety of in-development live-service projects to be shut down, which has made this generation feel particularly sparse. The controversial cancellation of Concord after just two weeks should have been the first signal that live-service wasn’t the way to go, but it hasn’t slowed down Sony’s ambitions.

Also, games like Saros and Marathon are solid, but they just haven’t found a big enough audience. Both games are more niche than the usual Sony offerings, and Marathon has the added baggage of being blamed by some Destiny 2 fans as the reason behind the long-running FPS getting its support ended.

Sony Parting Ways With Hideo Kojima Productions Is Baffling

Sony dropping Hideo Kojima and Physint was a big shock, and it could prove to be a huge mistake down the road. The company’s reasons for parting ways with Kojima Production were due to claimed budget concerns and alleged missed deadlines. However, Xbox has swooped in and saved Kojima Production’s Physint, meaning PlayStation’s biggest competitor now has two Kojima-made games on the way, which gives Xbox a serious edge.

The other Kojima Productions game that Xbox has in its upcoming lineup is OD, a mysterious horror game that is being co-written by Jordan Peele and starring Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer.

God of War Laufey and Intergalactic Really Have to Deliver Now

On the bright side, Santa Monica Studio and Naughty Dog are two of the best Sony-owned studios around, so it’s hard to imagine a world where God of War Laufey and Intergalactic are bad or end up struggling financially. However, nothing is impossible. God of War Laufey‘s release date puts it in a month filled with a lot of competition, and even though it looks like the obvious frontrunner, surprises can happen.

In addition to God of War: Laufey, the February 2027 release calendar is filled with major names like Metro 2039, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and Fable. This many highly anticipated launches in one month has turned February 2027 into a serious game release battleground.

Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic looks deeply intriguing, but it’s also a huge risk on the developer’s part. It’s the first original IP that Naughty Dog has created in over a decade, and it’s possible that the game’s story and gameplay simply don’t resonate with audiences. Intergalactic‘s release date is also shrouded in mystery at the moment, which could be a problem. There have been reports that it could arrive in late 2027, but there are also conflicting rumors that it may not be until 2028. If the game takes that long to come around, then Sony’s 2027 exclusive roster would be a barren wasteland that God of War Laufey would have to fill up on its own.

Granted, this is all speculation on my part, and there’s always a chance that Sony could make some stronger decisions and exciting game announcements before the year is up. The 2026 Game Awards are starting to creep up, after all. So, only time will tell what else lies in store for Sony’s future. After building a reputation as a company known for crafting some of the best single-player narratives in gaming, it has been frustrating watching some of Sony’s decisions unfold. Running a company that large can’t be easy, but I hope that the next few years see Sony get back to what it does best. God of War Laufey and Intergalactic could finally put an end to Sony’s bad luck streak, but that remains to be seen.
