A new rumor has surfaced suggesting that Grand Theft Auto 6 could get a physical disc release as early as December 2026. As things currently stand, the only physical version of Grand Theft Auto 6 that fans can pre-order does not contain a disc, but instead comes with just a code in a box.
After years of waiting, it seems that Grand Theft Auto 6 has finally locked in a release date for good. And ahead of that November 19 release date, fans around the world can now pre-order the long-awaited open-world crime game on both PlayStation and Xbox, with the Standard Edition of GTA 6 retailing for $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition of GTA 6 costing $99.99. On top of these hefty price tags and the lack of a disc in the physical pre-order, Grand Theft Auto 6 has come under fire for the contents of its more expensive Ultimate Edition, with it seemingly locking several in-game shops behind a paywall.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Could Get a Disc Version in December 2026
Back in January, Polish video game outlet PPE reported that a physical release of Grand Theft Auto 6 could be delayed for a few weeks or even a few months, allegedly in an attempt to avoid story spoilers leaking early. This report was based on information that PPE had received from its own insider source. In February, just a week after this report, Variety asked Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick about the rumors that it was delaying GTA 6‘s physical release, to which he simply replied, “That’s not the plan.”

Flash forward almost five months and Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders are now live across the globe, and technically speaking, Zelnick stayed true to his word. While fans can now pre-order a physical version of GTA 6 ahead of its November 19 release date, that version of the game will simply present them with a box containing a code for a digital copy of the game that can presumably only be redeemed once on one specific Xbox or PlayStation account. This means that fans wouldn’t be able to trade in their physical copy of Grand Theft Auto 6 at a later date, or let friends borrow their copy.
But according to a new rumor from PPE, a disc version of GTA 6 could be on the way, and it might arrive much sooner than many fans would expect. PPE has just reported that Take-Two could be planning a more traditional physical disc release of GTA 6 for December 2026, just a month after the game’s initial launch. This report is based on information provided by the same insider that claimed the physical launch of the game would be delayed altogether. Of course, players should always take any and all rumors with a hefty pinch of salt, but there may be at least some hope for physical video game collectors.

Another recent rumor suggests that an even more expensive edition of Grand Theft Auto 6 could also be in the works at Rockstar. Yesterday, Portuguese YouTuber Ricfazeres released a video claiming that they’d heard from an anonymous insider that a Grand Theft Auto 6 Collector’s Edition is on the way. Ricfazeres only mentions this version briefly and does not detail any of its potential inclusions, however.
