A new report indicates that Grand Theft Auto 6 may not be able to reach 60 FPS after all. The investigation looks at the hardware capabilities of both the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, and it doesn’t look good for the frame rate capabilities of Grand Theft Auto 6.
GTA 6 pre-orders have opened, its release date has been locked in, and fans are extremely eager to play it, given that GTA 6 has generated a billion dollars in revenue for Rockstar Games within an hour. However, with no third trailer released and only new screenshots to judge the game by, some fans have expressed concerns about the performance of the game. This worrying report may reinforce fans’ fears.
GTA 6 Physical Version Gets Disappointing Update
Grand Theft Auto 6’s physical version gets yet another disappointing update.
GTA 6 Might Not Be Able to Run at 60 FPS on Current Consoles
A new look at the capabilities of the current-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles indicates that they may not be powerful enough to handle GTA 6 with 60 FPS. Previously, it was suggested that a Performance Mode for GTA 6 would bring the game to 60 FPS. However, a report from Digital Foundry claims that it’s unlikely for GTA 6 to reach 60 FPS due to the relatively limited power of the CPU on both the PS5 and Xbox family of consoles. Even the PS5 Pro, which offers more powerful specs, may not have enough in the way of CPU power to make 60 FPS happen, as the biggest upgrades the console offers are by way of its GPU, not CPU.

The reasoning for these claims is due to the level of fidelity and simulation elements in GTA 6. DF claims that dense cities are likely to get hit the worst, with computational physics, plenty of NPCs, and the ability to move quickly through areas by car or air travel likely taxing the CPUs of the PS5 Pro, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles considerably. Additionally, when GTA 4 and 5 launched, as well as Red Dead Redemption 2, none of the games were able to achieve 60 FPS on console. They were set to 30 FPS instead, and sometimes struggled to maintain it. DF suggests that Rockstar prefers to maintain fidelity with a frame rate limited to 30, rather than cut down on visuals in favor of higher FPS.
Clearly, gamers have faith that GTA 6 will deliver, given the fact that pre-orders have been selling at a tremendous pace, and some players have even purchased scalped pre-orders for GTA 6 despite there being no limit on their availability from official channels. Rockstar Games has a solid history of producing some of the most detailed and in-depth open world games in existence, and it’s unlikely to lose its footing with GTA 6, given the long development time its undergone and the huge impact it will have on Rockstar’s reputation and earnings.
From the sound of it, it’s possible that GTA 6 may not be playable in its full glory on consoles until a new generation arrives. When GTA 6 comes to PC, it’s likely that some gamers with high-end rigs will be able to achieve smoother gameplay and better visuals than what consoles currently have to offer. However, with no set GTA 6 release date for PC at this time, it could be a year or more before gamers have that opportunity.
