GTA 6 Online Player Count Leaked by Official Court Documents

Grand Theft Auto 6 is getting close to its long-awaited release, with neither developer Rockstar Games nor publisher Take-Two Interactive having said much about GTA 6 Online, but court documents may have leaked an in-development feature of the game. The companies have been insistent that GTA 6 is a single-player game, but whenever it comes out, fans know that an Online component is certainly happening. Still, while Rockstar has now shown plenty of GTA 6‘s world, characters, and gameplay through its trailers and other official marketing, the future of multiplayer remains almost completely unknown.

Of course, Rockstar’s focus right now is on launch, not what comes for GTA 6 beyond November 2026. Fans simply have to wait and be patient, but those curious about its multiplayer may have inadvertently received a little confirmation. In short, documents submitted by Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive in an ongoing legal dispute may have accidentally provided one small piece of information about the game’s multiplayer.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Officially Confirms How Police, Wanted Systems Work

Grand Theft Auto 6 developer Rockstar details how its police, wanted, and heat systems work in the upcoming open-world crime game.

Rockstar Legal Dispute Lists GTA 6 Online Player Count

Rockstar has referenced an “online 32-player format” for a highly confidential project in filings connected to the legal battle over the firing of 34 developers. According to Rockstar in these legal court documents (via Rock Paper Shotgun), fired employees had been “candidly referencing” the feature in discussions on a union-run Discord server. The description is extremely brief, but it appears to point toward a 32-player online format being developed for the new version of GTA 6 Online. It could, in theory, refer to something else, but that feels unlikely. Rockstar specifically described the information as confidential at the time, making this one of the clearest hints yet that a larger multiplayer experience is being developed for GTA 6:

“Other Claimants in Room C were candidly referencing game features – one of the most closely guarded secrets of the company. Two discussed an online 32-player format which was highly confidential at that time.”

The GTA 6 online information comes from filings that Rockstar submitted while defending its decision to fire the developers. Rockstar claims the employees were sharing confidential information on a public forum, while the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain has accused the company of being motivated by union-busting. Rockstar studio director Jennifer Kolbe said that seeing employees share confidential online player numbers was “extraordinarily alarming,” particularly because it happened only months after a major GTA 6 leak revealed design decisions and the names of main characters.

It’s uncertain what exact format this 32-player format would take, but the thing is, Grand Theft Auto 5‘s online sessions currently support the same number of players (typically 30 with 2 spectator slots). Some fans may be saddened to learn that Rockstar isn’t pushing for bigger player counts being officially supported, but one important aspect to keep in mind is that Rockstar has revealed nothing official about GTA 6 Online yet. In other words, it might have been 32 players at one point, but the company may have ramped it up since then. There have been rumors that GTA 6 Online would support 64-player lobbies, but that’s way less concrete than these court docs.

Even though these are official court documents, it’s important that fans take it with a grain of salt given the nature of this mention. For now, Rockstar remains almost completely silent about GTA 6 Online. The 32-player reference could offer an interesting glimpse at what Rockstar Games may be working on, but until the company actually discusses GTA 6‘s multiplayer plans, there are still far more questions than answers.
