A Grand Theft Auto 6 executive has revealed that the game once featured an immersive mechanic that had to be removed because it could have taken things too far. While most of the discussion surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 currently focuses on the content featured in its latest gameplay reveal, the things that did not make it into the final version seem to be just as interesting.
This new comment on GTA 6‘s cut content comes from Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North. Nelson and his team hosted an exclusive in-person preview for select content creators and outlets, during which he played the game for a couple of hours and answered questions. One of those invited to the preview was Australian YouTuber TGG, also known as The Gaming Gorilla. He was the one who learned about an immersive GTA 6 feature that the development team ultimately decided to remove.
GTA 6 Used to Force Players to Buy Groceries
At one point in development, you had to go buy groceries.
After visiting Rockstar North for an exclusive gameplay showcase, YouTuber TGG said, “Rob [Nelson] literally said that at one point in development you had to go buy groceries.” He later explained that the development team decided to cut that feature because it could have taken the life sim aspects of GTA 6 gameplay a little too far.

TGG also added, “You can still, like, go get groceries.” And he mentioned watching Jason buy beers and snacks in the preview, so it seems Rockstar changed it into an optional part of the gameplay rather than something mandatory for survival. Also, according to TGG, buying groceries and consumables affects gameplay in different ways. For example, he talks about how protein bars can boost the player’s stats before a workout and eventually help build muscles faster in GTA 6.
TGG watched Rob Nelson play the game for three hours, during which he got to see many new GTA 6 gameplay features. For instance, he talked about other immersive mechanics that actually made it into the game, such as buying a gym membership. He said, “If anyone ever asks you how in-depth GTA 6 is, just tell them you buy a membership at a gym.” Another content creator, El Rubius, who also got to see raw GTA 6 gameplay, talked about similar realistic features. He said that players can interact with almost everything in their houses, from opening the fridge and grabbing a snack to turning the lights on and off or watching TV.
With everything shown or confirmed about GTA 6 so far, it is safe to say that even without mandatory grocery shopping, it will still compete with some of the most extensive life simulation games out there. Jason and Lucia seem to be living in a world that acknowledges them and responds to their decisions, while Leonida is said to be an action-packed state where something is happening around every corner. In the coming months leading up to the release, it will be interesting to see if Rockstar Games reveals more new mechanics that further emphasize GTA 6‘s life sim aspects.
