GTA 6’s Record Pre-Orders Make GTA 5’s Historic Launch Look Almost Modest

GTA 6’s Record Pre-Orders Make GTA 5’s Historic Launch Look Almost Modest

Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders have been live for nearly a month now, and even though Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive haven’t released any official numbers, that hasn’t stopped analysts from making some wild predictions about the game’s early sales. The wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 has ignited some of the most intense hype that the games industry has ever seen. Between fan theories, leaks, and rumors, GTA 6 is on the path to being one of the most historic launches in gaming history.

Before the first GTA 6 trailer ever debuted, predecessor GTA 5 was still going strong. The game was a massive success for Rockstar when it first came out in 2013, but GTA 5 got a huge second wind in 2020 once the COVID-19 pandemic hit and people found themselves in lockdown with a lot of extra time on their hands. Both GTA 5 and GTA Online got a significant bump in players, and both the single-player and multiplayer mode have continued to be money-making machines for Rockstar. GTA 6 is expected to tower over its predecessor, though.

After 13 Years, GTA Online Makes Way for the GTA 6 Era to Finally Begin in Full

GTA Online’s update adds brand-new content to keep players busy while Rockstar shifts its attention to the brand new era of GTA 6.

If Analysts Are Right, GTA 6’s Predicted Pre-Order Sales Are Already Setting the Game Up to Blow GTA 5 Out of the Water

It only took GTA 5 three days to make it past the $1 billion mark, which is already mind-boggling. Reports from financial analysts have alleged that GTA 6 is already well ahead of those numbers, though. Some reports have even claimed that the GTA 6 pre-order sales have already generated $1 billion in revenue. These kinds of reports should be taken with a grain of salt until Take-Two Interactive or Rockstar announce something official, but if true, it offers just a taste of how crazy the game’s launch day will be.

The GTA 6 launch week sales predictions paint an even wilder picture of what’s potentially to come in November. Reports are suggesting that GTA 6 could make around as much as $5 billion in its first week, completely overshadowing GTA 5‘s already impressive launch week numbers. Even though GTA 6 is on track to one-up GTA 5 in a massive way, the former has the latter to thank for all this hype.

As of 2026, it’s estimated that GTA 5 has sold around 230 million copies.

GTA 5’s Years of Success Has Turned GTA 6 Into More Than Just a Sequel

Since 2013, GTA 5 and GTA Online have been available on multiple console generations and boast 13 years worth of gaming memories that have created die-hard fans of the series. The Grand Theft Auto franchise was incredibly popular before GTA 5 hit the scene, but over a decade between entries allowed the latter to reach a completely new level ahead of GTA 6. The combination of GTA 5 and GTA Online marked a new era for the franchise, because it demonstrated how one game world can offer years upon years of entertainment.

GTA 5 isn’t the only game to thank, either. Red Dead Redemption 2‘s 2018 launch featured the immersive world that GTA 5 did, except the graphics, story, and lifelike qualities were far more impressive this time around. Between GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, the expectations surrounding GTA 6 are incredibly high, with many expecting it to be the ultimate gaming experience.

Rockstar Has Made Controversial Decisions Ahead of GTA 6’s Launch, But That Doesn’t Seem to Have Deterred Fans

When the pre-orders went live, one of the biggest questions was regarding GTA 6‘s physical version. Many were surprised (and frankly, understandably outraged) to find out that the physical copy of GTA 6 won’t have a disc. Gaming’s move away from physical media has ignited a lot of anger from gamers who love to collect and have a sense of ownership over the products they pay for, but the industry seems to be embracing a digital-only world full steam ahead. Not including an actual disc in the physical copy’s box is far from the only controversial decision Rockstar has made, though.

Rockstar’s GTA 6 Launch Strategy Has Ruffled Some Feathers in More Ways Than One

  • GTA 6 will only be available for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at launch. This isn’t out of the ordinary for Rockstar, but the long wait has many eager to play the game, leaving them feeling pressured to buy a console.
  • The game’s Standard Edition costs $80, which is more expensive than the average AAA game. Other games to recently have this price point include Mario Kart World. GTA 6 adopting this price point has many worried that this will be the new standard pricing.
  • GTA 6‘s Ultimate Edition costs $100 and offers a lot of extra in-game content like stores, cosmetics, and even side missions that can only be accessed through buying this version.

Despite the controversy and debate that these decisions have ignited, it isn’t stopping gamers from pre-ordering GTA 6. The hype and love for Rockstar-made games has reached a point that it overpowers any anger that has come from the company’s choices. Games by Rockstar have continued to boast a fantastic reputation, and a lot of people are simply willing to pay for them, even when some decisions could easily be seen as unfriendly to consumers.

GTA 6‘s release is going to be one of the most exciting moments of the year, but it’s also going to be a little sad to see GTA 5‘s reign come to a close. It will truly be the end of an incredible era. Handing over the torch to GTA 6 will kickstart a new era, though, and watching it unfold is bound to be compelling.

An online version of GTA 6 is expected, but Rockstar has yet to officially make an announcement. It wouldn’t be surprising if Rockstar released it as a separately priced product, but this is purely my own speculation.

There’s no way to know for sure what the GTA 6 launch sales numbers are going to be, but it would be surprising if they weren’t history-making. At this point, GTA 6 has become more than a game. It’s a pop culture phenomenon, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how it influences the industry for years to come.
