A senior Warner Bros. Discovery official may have hinted that Hogwarts Legacy 2 could release in 2027 or 2028. What’s more, the Hogwarts Legacy sequel may not be the only high-profile Warner Bros. game to launch during that period.
Avalanche Software’s first open-world RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter launched in February 2023, becoming one of Warner Bros.’ most significant recent successes in the video game sphere. A subsequent job listing suggested that Hogwarts Legacy 2 started development no later than July 2024. Two months later, Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said that developing a successor to the hit 2023 game was one of the company’s “biggest priorities” in the medium term. Although the group has since streamlined its video game operations, closing some studios and narrowing its strategy, all signs point to Hogwarts Legacy 2 remaining part of its plans.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 May Feature Competitive Online Multiplayer
The latest hints at a possible Hogwarts Legacy sequel seem to indicate that competitive online multiplayer features may be on the way.
WB Games Signals 2027–2028 Is Its Next “Big Franchise” Window
On Warner Bros. Discovery’s latest earnings call, President of Global Streaming and Games JB Perrette described 2025 as a “reset year” and insisted the company will soon aim to deliver more compelling results. “The real fruits will start coming in ’27, ’28 when we return to some of our biggest franchises,” the executive said. While Perrette didn’t name titles, the timing aligns with the potential Hogwarts Legacy 2 release window, assuming that the sequel started development around the time the first game went gold.

The executive confirmed that none of those returns to the company’s biggest franchises have been formally announced yet, thus dropping yet another hint suggesting that Hogwarts Legacy 2 could be among them. Perrette’s remarks also characterized 2026 as a lighter year for major releases, with Warner Bros. highlighting projects such as a new LEGO Batman title and a mobile game called Game of Thrones: Conquest.
One reason Hogwarts Legacy 2 aligns with that timeline is Warner Bros. Discovery’s stated goal of coordinating major Harry Potter initiatives across its multimedia divisions, including HBO’s upcoming television adaptation. HBO executives have previously indicated the series is being targeted for early 2027, making a 2027–2028 game release plausible if the company aims to launch the sequel around the show’s debut. Alternatively, releasing the game during subsequent seasons could also allow WB Games to capitalize on whatever momentum HBO’s live-action Harry Potter TV series ends up generating.

The company’s “return to biggest franchises” phrasing may also be pointing at Batman, possibly hinting at Rocksteady’s direction following Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Although no new projects were formally announced on the call, industry reports have consistently linked Rocksteady with a new Batman project for a while now. However, 2027–28 may be too early for such a project to materialize, given that the studio was focused on Suicide Squad: KTJL until early 2024 and that major AAA projects typically require around five years of development.
WB Games’ Biggest IPs as of Early 2026
- Harry Potter
- Game of Thrones
- Mortal Kombat
- DC Comics
Warner Bros.’ broader messaging suggests that a small group of core brands will dominate its gaming slate in the foreseeable future, reflecting the company’s recent efforts to streamline operations. The restructuring has so far resulted in the closure of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor developer Monolith Productions and MultiVersus creator Player First Games. Support studio WB Games San Diego was also shut down as part of the same initiative. No further studio closures are expected in the near term. It remains unclear how Netflix’s pending acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery could affect the latter’s gaming strategy, particularly as the streaming giant made no mention of video game studios in its December 2025 acquisition announcement.
