How To Get The Scanner Upgrade In Subnautica 2 – Bioscanner Guide

Are you wondering how to get the Scanner upgrade in Subnautica 2? This device, known as the Bioscanner, doesn’t just give you info about man-made objects and basic lifeforms. It actually lets you learn more about the enigmatic alien beings known as the Axum.

Subnautica 2 gear guide – Bioscanner upgrade

The Subnautica 2 Bioscanner upgrade can be yours a bit later in your run. That’s because you have to venture far to the east of the Lifepod. If you’re following our mini-walkthrough, then you need to check out the Alien Ruins well past the Tadpole Pens.

Cicada Wreck location

Once you reach the Alien Ruins, tackle a few objectives from the NOA Terminal until you learn about the Iso blackbox signal. It’s actually east-northeast of the region, fairly close to the large alien turbine. If you look at the top of a plateau, you’ll see the Cicada Wreck (EVA Prep). Inside, you’ll find the Iso blackbox, Bioscanner, and other goodies.

Bioscanner location

Here’s what you need to know upon entering the Cicada Wreck:

  • Use your Repair Tool to fix the doorway. In the main room, you’ll see several EVA Suits in pods. You can also scan the Improved Fins in the crate.
  • Go to the next room to find the Iso blackbox and the Photovoltaic Charger, which is a Tadpole upgrade module. Scan the Modification Station, too, while you’re there.
  • Head down the shaft and replenish your oxygen via the air tank.
  • At the bottom of the shaft, you’ll find the Bioscanner. Scan it to learn the crafting blueprint.
  • You can go back the way you came, or you can repair the door to exit the wreckage.

Bioscanner crafting materials and usage

The Subnautica 2 Bioscanner upgrade has to be crafted via a Modification Station. It requires the following materials:

  • 1x Scanner
  • 2x Enameled Glass
  • 3x Conduit Crystal

Enamels and Conduit Crystals can be found in the Alien Ruins biome. The former look like clumps with multiple protrusions, while the latter are akin to kelp-like objects that grow near corrupted Rockbore/Angel Combs.

That does it for our guide on how to unlock the Bioscanner upgrade in Subnautica 2. With it, you should gain more insights about the strange alien beings on the planet. Lastly, at this point in the game, you might want to obtain the Feedback Resonator upgrade and activate the alien door/turbine.

Subnautica 2 is currently in early access, which means new biomes, systems, and story beats are expected to be added as part of updates. For everything you need to know about the game, you can visit our Subnautica 2 guides hub.
